I'm not sure if half way through these programmes is a good point to assess but whilst we were watching last night's episode, Mrs.M asked me what the point of the programme was so I mentioned what had been said earlier that it was to change someone's perceptions, shake them out of their lethargy and make them value the life they have by manipulating their surroundings and reactions. She pondered for a nanosecond and said, But he's done all that before, several times'. At the moment, that's my assessment as well. Not on;y Hero but the one where that girl who was a self confessed less considerate driver being shown what appeared to be her own death in a car smash, ably reinforced by an actress wearing a life mask created by our very own Tom Lauten, then there was the one where the audience were making more and more dangerous decisions about what they thought was a random member of the public....
Derren's stage shows are excellent and his talents in that direction are still unsurpassed but his TV appearances seem to be trying to get further and further away from that side of things. Once he was a magician, then a mentalist, now a manipulator of people. It brings to mind things like The Truman Show and The Running Man, which were once only works of fiction. It seems that the acceptance of voyeurism, as generated by Big Brother and it's clones, is alive and developing.
Having said that, at no point were there any suggestions that this programme would involve any magic or mental ism so perhaps we ought not to expect it to appeal to many of us here?
I'll wait until after the next show to say more.
