What's happened to my laptop?

Postby artychris » Jun 5th, '12, 11:19

Morning,

I'm not very technically minded so I thought I'd see if any of you knew the answers to this!

I seem to have something on my laptop that turns certain text in to links to an ad for an i-phone competition. (On this site, words like Card, Magic, Steps, cloud, complete and psychics are all now a different colour and underlined...) I don't even need to click on them, just run the mouse over them and a new window (powered by text-enhance) just pops open.

Any ideas about how I stop this?

Cheers in advance :)

Chris

Yes, get a decent virus scanner and use it.

And...

On a few different sites, I can't navigate around without a window constantly popping up saying something like "Do you wants to only view the webpage conent that was delivered securely? The web page uses contents that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS connection, which could compromise the security of the entire webpage,"

Any ideas with this one?

These two things have only been happening since yesterday... and I don't think I went to any sites that I don't usually go or that are too dodgey!...

I have AVG and have just run a check with that and nothing, and also a HP health check... nothing found

You've certainly got something.

Download a rescue disk, cut it to DVD, boot wit hit and do a complete scan. It will take several hours, but it will find everything.

I have AVG...

He said "decent" ;)

Only joking - AVG is decent. However, using something like Malware Bytes to get a second opinion is worthwhile. And, as Tomo says, bootable scanners are handy.

That's uncharacteristically optimistic for you :)

It won't necessarily find everything but it stands a greater chance against rootkits than software installed onto an infected Windows system.

He already said what the 'virus' is.

If you are using chrome, try this: http://botcrawl.com/how-to-remove-text-enhance/

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Thanks for all the advice and help everyone, it's all really appreciated :)

I've tried scanning it with various things, but nothings finding the problem.

I've been using an older version of google, and went into the extensions there and found it, but it wouldn't let me remove it. So I've switched to chrome, removed the thing and hopefully everything is good!

(If I'm missing something here, please let me know...)

Thanks again :)
