Phantom Knife by Richard Osterlind

Postby Its magic » Jun 5th, '12, 11:46

The Effect
The effect is a close-up verison of knife through coat but using any suitable items made of material.

The routine is three phase, one penatration through the cloth and a bank note, or piece of paper if you don't want to wreck a note.
The second is the same but you lift the paper to show the blade through.
The third and final stage is pushing the whole knife through.

Cost: £33.00 including postage

Difficulty 1
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Examinable: Yes 100% at any time during the routine you are clean all the way through.

Review
This is something that has not really made much of a stir which surprises me.

The effect is shown using a shirt but a handkercheif, table cloth or napkins (found in most hotels) all work very well with this.

It is all self contained and can be carried on your key ring as it is just a small pocket knife.

There is only one move in the whole routine which is not hard to do giving you a really nice penatration effect.

I link this with Bob Swadlings Double Deception which gives me a 2 great effects along a similar lines.

Overall

This is very easy to do and is really nice for walk around or at tables, check it out.

It can stand up to 100% examination at any time during the routine.

There are no extra bits to hide or palm.

Well made and well explained but you have to be careful when choosing materials. I bought it for a pocket trick but found its not suitable for me but that doesn't detract from the trick's ingenuity.

After seeing Mark work this a few times last Wednesday, Its going on my list.
I looked from every angle and it looked strong from them all.

I didn't want to like it... I tried to ignore it, But it just looks great!

I took a look at this; I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. The method is straight forward and it’s dead easy to do. It certainly seems to have slipped under many performers radars. I give it a big thumbs up.

The knife's not gimmicked so there's nothing to find.

I'd be worried about the legalities of carrying a knife around. Isn't it illegal in the UK?

The knife is a small "Swiss army" type

OK, but is it legal to carry that sort of knife? I know they're really strict now in the UK.

According to the British Knife Collector's Guild:

The Criminal Justice Act (1988) says that you may carry a knife with a blade length of 3.0" or less so long as it is capable of folding. That means no fixed blade knives. But use your loaf - a knife has no place at a football match, in a pub, nightclub or school and becomes an offensive weapon in these circumstances in just the same way as a screwdriver, or any other innanimate tool.

In fact, individual places can enforce their own regulations about this. Last Saturday I went on a tour of The Houses of Parliament and had with me my trusty Swiss Army Pocket Knife which has a 2" blade (and, of course, a very essential bottle opener and corkscrew!). Airport style security with scanners etc was in use and the signage clearly said that knives of any sort weren't permitted. Naturally I showed them the knife, they took it, gave me a receipt, and I collected it at the end of the tour on the way out, no sweat, no problems. That afternoon I did the tour of Buckingham Palace, again airport style security with scanners, no signs about knives and even though my coat went through the Xray thingamajig, nobody raised any objections.
