Virus Problems

Postby Part-Timer » Dec 23rd, '04, 11:22

Just thought I'd say that the Derren Brown forum has been hit by a worm virus. From what I've seen, this affects php boards (like this one) which aren't run on up-to-date versions of the software (and the TalkMagic forum is not on that software). Derren's website now has a non-functioning loop if you try to access the forum. I think this was just a quick fix.

As such, it is theoretically possible for this forum to be hit by the virus and all the data lost. It can be restored if backed up, but I don't know if that happens with this forum.

Apparently it spreads by Google and they have now blocked the searches the virus would run in order to pass itself to other sites. This should mean we are safe, but it might be worth seeing if the software can be updated.

Funny you should say that - I tried to log on to talkmagic early this morning. First it wouldn't work (error 404 or whatever), about 5 minutes later it came up with some php jargon, then about 10 mins after that it was back to normal.

Maybe the mods could have a look to make sure there were no funny goings-on this morning?

Error 404 is a page not found error, it means that the link you have followed is wrong, the page is not there or the server the page is on can't find it.

I don't think the Bunny problem was anything to do with the virus. I've seen it before there and on other forums.

Trust me, you'd know it if it had been hit by the virus. All you get is a black screen, with a message in red.

the latest version of phpbb is 2.0.11 - anything earlier than that is at risk from the santy virus :?
