Hotlink - Jay Sankey

Postby The4thCircle » Jul 21st, '12, 12:35

Recently, as an experiment, I decided to buy a few instant download tricks from Jay Sankey's website. This is one of them.

The Effect

Performer gets a card signed by the spectator And draws two hearts on the back about an inch apart. Then with a shake, the hearts on the back move together and link, and the spectator can keep the card.

Cost
Five US dollars.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

3 you'll need a DL and a commonly used change.

Review

This video seems to have been produced very cheaply, I mean you get what you pay for and all that but simple things like the fact that in showing you the prep for the trick he fluffs up and goes back to the very start of the explanation. He literally just starts again. Drops his screen presence, checks his hair and starts over, repeats his script verbatim, line for line, even says the same jokes again, as if he was intending to have the video start from this new beginning but never got around to editing off the first minute of the video.

That aside the routine is explained quite clearly, although there is no teaching on the DL and minimal on the change. I'm tempted to say this is quite refreshing to not be sold the same thing over and over but a lot of people purchasing this are likely to be beginners looking for a one trick fix for early onset CUPS, and be disappointed that he doesn't explain the DL at all. Bizarrely he gives a little bit of time aside to explaining that he's doing a DL and what a DL is, just not how he does it. And don't get me started on "just do a two card double undercut and you're ready to go".

Overall

As I will probably say in my other two reviews, this is one of those effects that an average magi can derive the method for by watching the demo. However having done so you may decide that it's only right to stump up the cash if you're going to perform this yourself.

Searching to see if there were other reviews of this, I saw that the same effect is on on elf Jay's DVDs along with some other material. I wonder if it's the exact same video, or he did a faster single take no editing edition of it for his site. From this video you get the feeling that he's basically decided to document in shorthand every routine he does, no matter how simple, just to put a line in the sand that says he got there first.

It's a good trick, but you'll need some foundation in cards, or be willing to develop some, in order to perform it well.

6/10
