ReviewThere's a couple of pieces of magic that I love out there that I don't write reviews on because, in all honesty, I want to keep them all to myself. I've only had this disc for a week or so, but it seems to fit in with that category already! However, as I read somewhere this is BBM's biggest selling dvd on pre-order ever, I figured that if I didn't review it, someone else certainly would.
It is what it says it is! Ultimate Self working Card Tricks. There are no sleights! At all! What so ever! Not even a DL! ... Don't let this put you off. In the introduction, Liam says that they've found the best tricks they could that happen to be self working. And it's not all the usual suspects either, so if you're hoping to find Gemini Twins, or OOTW, then this is the wrong disc for you.
This is a Big Blind Media production, so as expected, the production values are excellent. Most of the tricks have a small introduction with a little of the history of the trick and a bit about the creator. Then there's a very nice studio performance of each trick (if only my spectators all looked like the ladies they have on here!) and then a very thorough and clear instruction part.
The tricks are:-
Contact Colours (Aldo Columbini) This is a superb full deck trick. Starts off small, and the big reveal at the end isn't to far from OOTW!
Impossible (Mike Austin) A simple and impromptu card lost in the deck and then revealed. It's rather nice!
Shuffling Lesson (Chad Long) Apparently this is in the Art of Astonishment, but I hadn't discovered it in there... It's the first one from this disc that I performed and it's ridiculously easy! But wow! It's strong! You and the spectator are shuffling and mixing the deck in an extremely fair manner (and really, it is fair) only to find that... well, get the disc and find out! The double ending is great!
Henry Sugar (Liam Montier) Possibly my favorite piece of magic on here! It sort of reminds me of Derren Browns Plerophoria, only simpler! It's a fairly long, multi-phased mind reading piece. (So if you're happy using cards in your mentalism, you'll like this as much as I do!) The explanation has a lovely piece on misdirection regarding the backs of the cards too.
Pre-prefiguration (Larry Jennings/Mark Elsdon) A simple four card reveal that can be set up on the fly! Very usefull...
Your Aces Are Marked (Terry Lagerould) A wonderfully messy four ace reveal! I'm now trying to work out a way of wedging this into my four ace routine! I like this a lot. Very simple and effective, and very light on procedure.
Shuffleboard (Simon Aronson) Yet another winner! I'm saving this for the right time! Lots of fun with spectators, lots of shuffling, only to an amazing multiple prediction reveal! With a kicker ending! I'm not one to rate tricks that I haven't preformed... but for this I can happily make an exception! And I know that I'm going to use this a lot!
The 7/16 Club (Alex Elmsley) For me, this is one of the weakest tricks on the disc... but it's still a superb trick! For my taste it's a little to procedural (I'm just not a fan of the down under deal), but I'm sure that the end result makes it worth it! Plus, it's so easy to set up, so you can do it pretty much any time and with a borrowed deck! One to tuck away in the dusty corners of the brain... there will be a moment when this is perfect!
Impossible (Larry Jennings) Another chosen card lost and found routine, but this one is (appropriately) Impossible! Considering that its main working element is one that I use for a trick that is, in essence, very similar, I'm kicking myself for not spotting how this worked! Which says how well camouflaged it is! This is great! Another one that's going to be used alot!
4,5,6 (Al Thatcher) This I love! However, I haven't even tried it yet! For a self worker, I'm a little skeptical about the method! (More fool me, I'm sure!) Maybe there's a touch to much dealing in this one, but I'm picking nits! It's a lovely way of finding a chosen card! I need to sit down with some cards ad try this out a couple of times. I'm sure it's going to work! (Oh, and it's another one with a borrowed shuffled deck!)
Unbelieveable (Shields F Michael/Bascom Jones Jr.) Another killer trick! It's very fair, and very easy to do... and the end result is, well, Unbelievable! Somehow though, as amazing as this is, I can't help feeling that there's even more that can be done with the ending! It just seems to have so much possibility... (I just haven't worked out what yet! If you come up with anything, please let me know!)
As well as this, there's a small section with a couple of (very) basic false cuts and shuffles, and also some excellent little interview clips about the value of self workers, with some really nice performance tips!
OverallYou've probably worked out by now, I like this disc a lot!
It seems aimed at the beginner, especially as some of the explanation is very basic at times. But this isn't a bad thing at all... But just about all of these things are so strong that I see no reason why a working pro wouldn't be able to take tricks from here as well! There's also a really nice variety in the tricks here, partly I think because this disc isn't the working of just one magician, but a best of from some fantastic magicians.
With a lot of these, part of the effect is your ability to perform! You're freed up from having to concentrate of the difficult finger bits, to actually work on the interaction with your audience! For me, that's what makes these so much fun to perform
So don't be put off by the self working title! No matter where you are with your magic, I'm pretty sure you'll find something on here that you, and your audience, will love!
