I think that it is Kendall who is clueless. This is the review I was referring to:

.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................

It is not often at the Fringe when you are welcomed into the auditorium by the performer himself with the house lights fully up. This set the welcoming tone for an hour of comical gaffes and elementary 'magic' (and I use the term in its loosest sense) that never mystified but constantly entertained.
Ian Kendall has been performing at the Fringe for over two decades now - and it is safe to say his sleight of hand hasn't improved a jot. I sat on the end of the front row and saw every ball, card and dice he shiftily tucked away. It must be tough for a seasoned card magician to stay fresh and break into a modern world of magic characterised by the likes of Derren Brown and Dynamo. But I enjoyed Kendall's performance more: it was honest, simple; genuine. His charming delivery exhibited to two rows and still he had the crowd invested in him and his magic. Even though he got two card predictions wrong in a row - I didn't care.

I was more interested in Kendall’s back story, as he had been diagnosed with Aspergers as a child and developed an obsession with magic. This was all too readily brushed aside to continue with corny card tricks. This aspect was where the show fell down for me, as Kendall often began stories about his past and his relationship with stage magic, but never continued. I was so invested in him as a person that an honest story or two could have added so much more than cheap laughs and face value magic could.

Relating to the football expression 'he does it for the love of the game', Ian Kendall is certainly the theatrical equivalent. Battling through a performance where dropped cards and coins were only the start of a long list of problems which blighted the show, but never dampened his spirit and jokes. He deserves a sell out show, but unfortunately with this material that seems a long way off.
............................................................................................................................................................................................................................

The reviewer seems entertained but not mystified. It is obvious that his entertainment stems from the dropping of cards and coins and the "long list of problems which blighted the show" I would have been entertained too and probably even more than the reviewer. Kendall has defended himself elsewhere by saying that the evil reviewer was in a bad location and thus saw "every ball, card and dice shiftily tucked away". It hasn't dawned on poor Kendall that WHOEVER sat in that seat would ALSO have seen the badly executed sleight of hand and spread the word.

He has had the audacity to criticise my brilliant performances in the past so I thought I should return the compliment. In my act I only screwed up the Linking Rings (but everybody loved me just the same) whereas he screwed up two card predictions, various "corny card tricks", assorted coin tricks which seem to have ended up on the floor, and a partridge in a pear tree. The reviewer states that poor Kendall's sleight of hand hasn't improved much in 20 years but where there is life there is hope. Perhaps in another 20 years of the fringe he will manage a bit better providing he puts in a bit of practice.

Nonsense Kendall. I have given lots of clues to your cluelessness which is so beyond clueless that I have no clue how you can deny your cluelessness. But then, of course, you have no clue either. Perhaps one day you will clue in but I doubt it very much.

I agree with you Ian. Mark is pretty clueless sometimes, but he means well!!! As you know, my sister and her family live in West Linton, and I must get them to come and see your show one of these years. JR

Please consider the Ian/Mark correspondence closed.

Let's hear more about the Fringe - I was in Edinburgh a few weeks before it started and there was a lot of buzz about this year's Fringe being even better than before, is there more magic than in previous years?

Theres a lot of good free magic this year Mandrake and there is a magical mixtures night for amatuer magicians to perform. Going in again next Saturday to try and catch a few of the busking acts.

There was mention of Colin McLeod's show The Colour Ham. I saw it last night and it was excellent. Highly entertaining comedy, magic and mentalism from the three performers. I think they've only tomorrow's (Sun 12th) show left in their run. Some good magic in it from Colin and Kevin and the comedy from Gavin sets it off nicely. A really good night out.

Re Ian Kendall's show and the subsequent "discussion", I stand by my earlier comments. I saw the show and I really enjoyed it. I would certainly go back to see Ian perform again in the future.

Doug Segal's doing very well. Good reviews and a spot on the Fred McAulie show revealing his Olympic predictions. I don't know if there are any tickets left, but he may be headed for telly after this.

having watched many videos, and as much of the coverage of the festival on television and radio, Ive come to a conclusion.
Maybe i am getting old, but so much of the stuff people are doing is deeply unfunny, low budget rubbish.
audiences seem to be happy to howl with laughter, just because its Edinburgh,
