Penn And Teller: Fool Us

Postby aCeOfSpAdEs » Aug 16th, '12, 02:07

Hey there! :D

I'm a little confused and I would like to share my confusion with you. :)

There is an episode of "Penn And Teller Fool Us" (Season 1, Episode 8 where a 14 years old boy Jack Taperell performs a card trick.
When judging his performance, Penn and Teller refered to that trick as a sleight of hand trick (they say "we see every move you did").
But isn't that trick the "extreme mental effort" principle by Derren Brown? If it is, there are no "moves" needed.

Thanks a lot!

Which episode is it on? You missed it out in your post.

I may have been born yesterday but I stayed up all night.

If there are any moves, I've to say that he fooled me!

Alright, So it's very likely we're all thinking of the one way he could have done this that didn't require moves. If that is what he did then I imagine Penn's answer was given to avoid exposure.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

It is Derren's EME and was done with the same card.

Yes, I've noticed the same... It is the same card - queen of spades.
So, do you think that Penn's answer was given to avoid exposure?

Jack Taperell uses almost the same script! "Your smile is giving it away..." ;)

I think they knew the method within the first 15 seconds or so.
I would be rubbish at being the judges because when people show me a trick, and I know how it's done, my faking of a reaction is really poor.

'oh, uh... um... yeh... wow, how did... you? wow!'

I know Teller is a good friend of Derrens and they probably know the method behind the trick already. Being a television show and obviously edited I would think that the responses given were, shall we say 'diplomatic'?

Sometimes I really struggle to understand the whole business of plagiarism and copying in magic. Magicians always seem to complain if fellow magicians don't credit a particular sleight correctly or if they allegedly steal somebody else's method, and yet this person copied Derren's entire trick, performed it on television and no-one seems to complain. Granted he was only 14 at the time, but still. Anybody care to shed any light on this?

The same happend to Piff. his whole act was copied.

In one case, the boy was young and his TV appearance would help his future career. It is difficult to define your own personality and style at such a young age. I think the comments from P&T were more along the lines of encouragement than technical praise.

In the other case the performance was blatant plagarism and he was shot down by the judges.
