Absolute Magic by Derren Brown

Postby AndyRegs » Jan 5th, '05, 19:08

I was lucky enough to get both derren brown books for xmas. Pure effect is already reviewed, but i don't think absolute magic is.

The Effect- This is not a book of derren brown reicks, but more of a manifesto on how magic should be presented.

Cost - About £28 (though i got both on special deal from http://www.magicbox.uk.com

Difficulty You can't really give it a rating. You take from it what you want.
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review - Its a guide to how you take your performances to the next level. From mere clever tricks to 'real magic', making the experience more memorable to the spectator. He gives good examples of how he turned tricks which we all know and do, into what he calls real magic. He shows how magicians should not plan their routine with effects in mind, but with the emotional experience it gives the spectator in mind. It sounds heavy, and is in places, but is well worth reading if you want to improve your magic, and increase that 'wow' factor we all strive for.

Overall - A very good read. Derren has a very good writing style. In places fascinating, in others hilarious. It will make you go back to square one with most of your magic effects and make you re-think them for the better. 9/10

Hi Andy. Welcome to TalkMagic and thanks for the review.

Just out of interest though, before writing a review it is always worth checking out the review index (which sadly isnt very uptodate at the moment) and doing a search in the reviews section to see if the item has already been reviewed. If so, then it is prefered that you add your commets to the existing thread.

This item was reviewed here...

Please don't let my diatribe put you off writing reviews though, or indeed making any new posts at talkmagic. I look forward to hearing more from you..

Hey,
Sorry guys. I checked the review checklist, and did a search. Perhaps I wasn't thorough enough. Hope it was use to any other technophobes like me who couldn't find the original (and more in depth) review.
