What's wrong with my video playback on my PC ????

Postby moonbeam » Nov 4th, '12, 20:44

I've transferred a video (mp4 format) from my phone to my laptop.
On my phone, the video plays fine. It's crystal clear, high def (1080p) and plays fine with no jumps, etc.
However, when I play it back on my laptop, the sound is fine, but the video jumps like mad and freezes in places.
The video is 239 MB and is 1 min 40 secs long.
I have another MP4 file (700 MB) that didn't come from my phone - this plays fine.
I've tried opening it with VLC player, WMP and Quick Time Player. They all either jump or play the vid in slow motion.
I've even transferred it to my desktop PC and I encounter the same problem.
Anyone any ideas what's going on plzz ????

The first thing to try is to do a re-transfer, it is possible that it got corrupted in initial transfer so rule this out first. After that we can look at other issues :)

I've just tried playing the file direct from my phone, through my PC. I've got the phone connected to the PC with a USB lead, I've located the file and double clicked it, so it plays on my PC - exactly the same as before .... it's as laggy as hell, yet it plays fine when I play it on my phone ......

Sounds like a codec problem; if your phone is considerably newer than the last time you updated your PCs codecs, then you'll need to download an up to date video codec pack.

Google 'why download video codecs', and then search for a free pack

Hmm - just checked my settings in WMP and it's configured to "download codecs automatically" so I would have thought that they would be up to date.
Anyway, I downloaded from http://download.cnet.com/Windows-Essent ... 62709.html" target="_blank (it's a site I've used before, so I'm fairly sure it's okay) and my laptop just went nuts on me lol.
Everytime I went to open IE, it kept freezing and wouldn't open. I tried firefox and that worked fine
Then my laptop froze and I couldn't even shut it down, so I had to do a forced shut down and re-start in safe mode.
I ended up doing a system restore - I haven't got a clue what's just happened :| . Anyway, I'm doing a full scan at the mo to see if anything is going on ......

IE always has problems hence why I never use that as a benchmark. Not quite sure what happened based on what you have said but it shouldn't have been the codec file .

How are you transferring the file to your PC? Are you using your phones PC companion software or are you just accessing the hard drive on your phone? Have you tired to play the file in something like Windows Movie Maker for example? Have you tried to convert the file from mp4?

Here's another guide that may help

On my phone so this will be a short reply

Google VLC media player, it can play any file format with no issues and the codecs are much better than WMP

Hope this helps if not let me know

Much love

Problem sorted  .

It seems that, unless you have a very recent up to date PC/laptop, then you'll poss have problems playing back a video recorded in 1080p on your phone, 'cos of all the extra info, etc. Re-set the resolution to 720p and that solves the problem.

I posted this problem elsewhere and forgot about this thread soz, but thanks for the help anyway.

Here's the other thread I posted, just in case anyone's curious:

(For some strange reason, the link doesn't work if you simply click on it - copy and paste it and it works fine ....... )
