I was given one of these in the mid 1990s while we were acceptance testing at Tate and Lyle, apparently so that I could keep in touch. The aerial was just a bit of plastic. It never worked.

Sounds about right, and the flip was flimsy on the early models, they chunked it up in later versions I seem to recall. My first mobile was bought in 1993. I sent my first text though in 1994 when I was at uni and we were on the 'One2oNE' network!

Apparently that first message was sent by Neil Papwell, a 22-year-old British engineer who used his computer to send the message "Merry Christmas" to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone.

Hmm, only half a TXt really :D !

I had a brick on the Orange network. I remember holding it up into the too corner of my living room trying to get a signal. :D

I may have been born yesterday but I stayed up all night.

I wrote an article about the BBC's newly released Tomorrow's World archive a couple of years ago. In amongst it, I found this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vix6TMnj9vY

It's Michael Rodd reporting on a marvellous new British invention called a mobile phone back in 1979. However, as he says, the Post Office (who owned the airwaves at the time) couldn't see the point of supporting a private development and we lost a huge global lead. Well done us!

You're lucky you managed to get a signal in the living room. I remember buying my first Orange pay as you go in about 1998, got home all excited with my new toy only to find that I couldn't get a signal anywhere in the village.
