Darwins Encyclopedia of TT Magic

Postby kirko » Jan 25th, '05, 06:30

Ive been using TTs forever, and ive read all the books, and watched all the videos... Let me tell you, if you use a TT, you NEED this dvd set.

What it is:
A 3 dvd set on TT magic hosted and taught by Darwin the Magician

Whats does this set entail?
Well, for starters, many many tricks and moves that i had never thought of before with use of a TT. Some of the sleights that he teaches are things that other videos do not teach you. Everything from Misers Dream, to changing a 1 dollar bill to a 100 dollar bill. The video shows him in action on stage doing effects, then back to a one-on-one on how he accomplished the feat. Hes an older man, which means he speaks very slow and clear, and you can undertand what he is saying. Very strait forward and to the point.

There are also Bonus features on the dvds. They include classic TT, TT gimmicks, TT books, TT videos. It really is an encyclopedia on everything TT. Also, the encyclopedia is on 3 dvds, which means it is easy to get to the effect you wana see, or demonstration you wana see.

Whats my final word
Well as you can probably tell, i really enjoyed this video. It is strait forward, and easy to understand. They teach great sleights and great misdirection that other videos do not even touch on. Darwin is a pretty funny guy and has a great personality, therefore i was able to watch all 3 dvds strait through and didnt get bored. I highly recommend this dvd if you are just beginning to learn all the secrets to a TT, or advanced and want to brush up on your thumbing skillz. after this video, i think i can do a whole routine and not get caught even if the TT was red.

You can buy it from Penguin Magic & it's £22.37 for the 3 DVD set.

It's high on my C.U.P.S list

I've just bought this and will post my thoughs shortly.

When you read the lists of what you get for your money then it's very hard to find a reason NOT to buy this. It's jammed full!

I frequently fool around with a TT in front of friends and they never pick up on what's actually happening (yes, I know that's the point  ). I'm getting a little tired of the same old routines and there's 58 of them here, spread across the three DVD's so this appear to be right up my street.

Darwin is Fantastic!!!

Postby Dr. B.A.Loonatic » Dec 27th, '06, 21:00

Hello everyone, my name is Myer Goldstein, AKA Dr. B.A.Loonatic. I live in Las Vegas, NV and Gary Darwin (who lives here, also) has been a personal friend of mine for the past 20 years, and then some.

If you ever get a chance to visit Las Vegas, we have a local group of magicians that meets informally every Wednesday Night at about 10pm. The reason I mention the club here is because it's his club. He founded it decades ago and it has been his passion, along with his collection of magic paraphernalia. He doesn't come out much lately, his health is becoming prohibitively poor for late nights out.

Gary is a walking Encyclopedia of Magic. He is a rabid collector of anything having go do with magic. His house is a genuine museum. His personal library is easily on a par with the one at the Magic Castle.

His routines are inventive, his teaching is straightforward, and best of all, his DVD's make you THINK! He has been a mentor to me as a teenager, and he continues to teach me things even now. You may see 3 or 4 different variations or alternate applications for everything he teaches on the DVD's.

I personally own a copy of everything he's published over the years, but this DVD set pretty much covers the entire run. If you are a fan of the TT, or would like some fresh, new twists on ideas for it's use, this DVD set is an absolute MUST HAVE. In addition to the mechanics he teaches, you also get a look into the personality of the performer, and also some actual performance video. I will tell you up front; on the surface, many of the effects will strike you as "groaners". But after you get over that, you'll be adapting the concepts to other items/applications.

For example, he is the only person I know that incorporates some "thimble" moves for use in TT'ing. On the EXTREMELY RARE occasions he gets caught, he does a Thimble Back Palm to hide the offending TT. From that position he is able to show both hands empty palms up and palms down with no "funny looking" moves. After he's convinced you it's gone, (MAGICIANS ONLY) he brings it back to show you he never ditched it in the first place. I don't remember if that is on the DVD's or not. I'll have to go check it out. I'll post when I find out.

Obviously my opinion is biased, but it is my honest opinion.

My rating scale 1-10, 10 being my best/highest recommendation:

Value - 10

skill level - 10 (very easy to learn, very little difficulty in the moves)

Impact - 10

Overall rating - 10

This is by far the best collection on the TT. If you don't want to buy them all, get volume one and you will soon be purchasing the other volumes. In it's simplicity lies it's genious, and while I have been using a TT for years, it was not until 2006 that i purchased this DVD, and completely updated my handling. Darwin is a great guy, and this is top notch material.

Try out volume one, you'll love it!
