Does Rasputin count? He lead his own sex magick cult, walked across the Siberian plains (in shackles) because he felt like it, slept with the Tsar’s wife and was nigh on impossible to kill... But does he count?

Yeah, yeah, we've all been there and done that many times but could he do a decent D/L? How good was his linking rings, cups and balls, rope effects etc?

I really don't see how so many people like Criss Angel and David Blaine?! Criss doesn't really fit my style, because he does things that are just unreal. I mean dividing a person i two visually.. it's just impossible. That's why I like Derren Brown much more, because he makes the impossible seem plausible, and I've never heard about him using any stooges, which in my opinion is a total turn-off. I don't know if that's clear enough for you.

My favorite magicians are defenately (not nescesarily all-time favorites):
Close-up: Tommy Wonder, just because his tricks fool me over and over again, no matter how many times I watch them.
Stage: David Sousa - The true winner of FISM 2006, and I really like his clean performance style + he has a charisma and stage presence I admire. Don't have an all-time favorite because it's just impossible to pick one.
Mentalism: Derren Brown, a mentalist that never claims supernatural powers and he truelly fools me time after time.

I dont get the Tommy cooper thing. I think he cheapend magic and put the art back about a 100 years. Bottle tube , tube bottle. I ve seen better you tube presentations honestly if we didnt know anthing about Tommy and saw some one on the youtube doing that ah there would be masses of people saying "thats not magic" "the art the art"

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.

Tommy Cooper wasn't serious and was a comedy magician.
The worrying thing about these grungy little oiks is that they are deadly serious!

Victoria Beckham is a great magician. She had managed to influence people into believing the biggest illusion that there is -that she has a purpose.

My favourites have to be:

Paul Daniels (underated, a great performer and highly skilled)

David Acer (very funny and his material is superb)

Steve Dacri (because he looks like John Oates from Hall & Oates)

Derren Brown is great but a rather predictable choice. I think Derren himself is great but I am sick of all the wanabees who try to do his kind of material and have no delivery or authority and come across looking like something that rhymes with punts.

I have also seen (and I shouldn't say this as it's supposed to be a secret)
Markdini's fifteen foot ungimmicked leviation.

what a tough question....

i really don't wanna patronise anyone but for people to say criss angel and david blaine is a bit of a joke! - although i absolutely guarantee both are a lot better than me!

Blaine is good and the best thing he did was to revive the Houidini-esque spectacles in the cities of the US. Criss angel fools the audience at home but very few who are in front of him. - I'll send you all a video later of me defeating the entire US army with my finger...ha ha

I don't even think that i am in a position to say who's the best ever...how far back do we go?? ....do we talk about Robert Houdin or even those before him!? (although some people argue houdin stole most of his ideas but was the first to wrtie them down)

In terms of success, hard-work and originality you have to for Houdini, who was at one point the most famous man in the world. - but then again was he technically that good at close-up, probably not! - and this was before the motion picture became popular.

Its too hard...i'll go for my uncle who once made it look like he pulled his thumb off...only for it to be restored! Amazing

Best Magician

How about Merlin? He turned Arthur Pendragon into King Arthur. Let's see some of these modern day magicians do that! ;-)

No doubts...

Postby magicurty » Jan 18th, '08, 13:53

For me, there wasn't and there isn't one like Kaps was.
Nobody has got 3 world championship prizes, in followed Fism's.
The man was great, as a performer, adapter and inventor.
I will never stop to perform in my parlor shows one of his part-invented tricks which is called, The Sidewalk Shuffle. Fred was developer of all the handling in the original printing from the 60's. His work is something amazing for the magician studies, his moves were rich in every detail.
His performance was one of the most artisticals we can experience on magic. Not because his style, but his character, his acting itself.
And his misdirection domain, is incredible! Fred Kaps, performing, is an orchestra in action! Is pure magic, beautiful...Is amazing!
So no doubts friends, in my opinion this is the Master.
The best Magician in history, Fred Kaps!

I won't argue that Fred Kaps was one of the greatest, but didn't he only win 2 championships? And, to the best of my knowledge - Jason Latimer has also won 3 (including 1 Grand Prix). Splitting hairs, I know - but credit where it's due.

I am sorry, but your knowledgement miss this:

Jason Latimer have 1 Grand Prix, that he shared the 1st place with Norbert Ferré, in 2003.
He have only 1 GRAND PRIX!

FRED KAPS, have 3 GRAND PRIX prizes, and this is unique and this feat was never repeated again by any other magician!!!

I tell you when:

in 1950, he won the GRAND PRIX, in Barcelona, Spain, under his first magician name Mystica (yes Fred Kaps was called Mystica before!). :D

in 1955, he also got the GRAND PRIX, in Amsterdam, Holland. :D

in 1961, he won the GRAND PRIX AGAIN, in Liège, Belgium.

For improve more your knowledge:
The 2 magicians in history, that got near Fred Kaps, were:

The also INCREDIBLE performer (that I admire a looot) from holland Richard Ross (I hope you had the opportunity to watch him manipulating), and the french Pierre Brahma.

Richard won the Grand Prix (alone), in 70 (Amsterdam), and 73 (Paris)

Pierre won the 1964 (sharing the G.Prix with Mr.Cox, in Barcelona), and in 1976 (Vienna).

Jason Latimer won 1 Grand Prix (sharing the 1st place), which is considered the maximum prize on the fism competition. His other prizes were not grand prix.

Fred Kaps HAVE 3 GRAND PRIX ALONE!!!!
(which is also a clear sign of distance from the 2nd place).

hope the informations were nice! They are true!!!
