Hello from Birmingham UK

Postby Nige » Feb 6th, '13, 14:40

Hi all,

Very enthusiastic newcomer here who has started much too late in life at the age of 47 but is really enjoying practising card handling skills and dabbling with some ring flight / ring and string techniques

I don't know much about magic but I do know quite a lot about how the human mind functions and how easily it fools itself so seeing spectators reactions fascinates me... I should have got involved in this stuff decades ago

Anyway, I'm pleased to be here and look forward to learning lots and lots and contributing where I am able

Many thanks for this Mandrake. It looks very interesting but I must state that I really am not a magician by any stretch of the imagination; any tricks I am able to perform are very very simple and any skill required is utterly basic. I notice in the thread that it does say the meet isn't really for beginners and I wouldn't want to feel out of place or that I'm a hindrance to those with skills. If on the other hand it is an option to attend I would like to - my confidentiality is guaranteed

Hi SpareJoker. That's a good question; no I don't but I am a qualified hypno-psychotherapist. I also deliver tai chi sessions for the over 55's for South Birmingham Council as part of a falls-prevention project. I talk a lot in these sessions about how we form certain limiting beliefs from the patterns we create based on our experiences and expectations (simple motivational stuff) and I can see how a similar process applies to the psychology of illusion; magic of course being a positive form of entertainment and amazement. I find it all fascinating

The wording about it not being for beginners merely means we aren't setting out to give magic lessons or any other tuition as such. However I've learned a lot from the other guys who are miles better than I am and the way some matters have developed from very sketchy and basic half-formed ideas is amazing - commercial release of some of the stuff is imminent!

No pressure to come along and join in, if you ever feel like an evening out and a swift half with loads of irreverent chat about magic then we'll be there - once we get going again after Blackpool!
