Round rooms!

Postby kevmundo » Feb 17th, '13, 23:05

I had a gig at the Marriot Hotel in N'thants last night. I've never played there before so I contacted a chap who had played there numerous times in a band. He assured me that there was only one room used for weddings and that it was rectangular with a dancefloor and stage at one end. I was happy to accept this at face value - which turned out to be an EPIC FAIL!!!!

When I arrived the rectangular room was already in use, and my event was in another room. A smaller room. A room that just so happened to be as round as round can be. So round in fact, that the dancefloor was in the middle, and all the tables were around it, 360 degrees. After swearing repeatedly to myself and crying in the foetal position I eventually pulled myself together. Please do not repeat my hubristic stupidity, and physically check the room before hand, or call the hotel. You then won't have to suffer the nausiating panic that I did.

Anyway, just to cheer you up, I video'd the after effects of my family favourite, crowd pleasing, never let you down, can't believe a pen and paper gets this reaction - Axxxxx Nxxxx

If you can spare 1 minute 30 seconds out of you life you can see me in action - in a round room!!

cant think why the shape of a room makes that much difference. :)

what you should do, is stand still in the middle a bit rather than pacing around. make them look where you want them to look.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

You can't see it but I have a card table, and behind that card table are things I really don't want people to see! I believe Dynamo had to cancel a gig because of a similar situation? But I take your point - I do run around rather alot! I was knackered by the end of it!!!!

Dynamo gave up a gig because of the room shape? That is pretty sad, I would hope you can do better than that. And obviously you did, so you are ahead of the game already.

I got caught out with something similar once, I arrived at what I'd been lead to believe was going to be a parlour show in front of 10 or so people. It turned out that I was wanted to do close up in a crowded living room. It took some quick thinking on my feet but I got through it well. A people have said before, if you know the basics well then you should be able to come up with something in any situation. For me, it turned into an evening of billet work and pseudo hypnosis and suggestion.
