Kinetic – Tom Wright

Tom Wright, the creator of CHILL, presents KINETIC

Effect: The ability to CONTROL demonstrated in 4 breath-taking effects that will leave your audience speechless.

Possession – A haunted and animated deck demonstrated in total isolation. The deck cuts to the chosen card prior to their selection jumping into their own hands.

Dead Rising – Tom’s own version of the rising cards. The spectator’s card rises from a shuffled deck that they hold onto, isolated inside a wine glass.

Telekinetic Note – A borrowed note rises inside an examined pint glass. Unbelievably, it then flies out into your waiting hand before everything is examined.

The Gift – A spectators note flies from their hand to yours.

Cost: £24.99 (£29.99 inc VAT)

What you get: Two precision made gimmicks are included as well as a comprehensive DVD study on all four effects presented by Tom Wright

Difficulty (1-5) 1. This really is a simple effect to master.

Preparation (1-5) 1 ½ - 2. One time preparation involved but nothing major and once your setup you can do this effect numerous times as it also instantly resets.

Review: Ok so when I ordered this I already had an idea of how this effect was done. I’m sure the more seasoned performers will also know the method. A lot of performers I know tend to stay clear of these effects as the method used can be rather tricky and usually requires a lot of practice. Not this effect though. Admittedly as with any decent effect practice makes perfect and this is a general rule of thumb, but with Kinetic it pretty much works straight out of the box and is quite easy to prep, set-up and most importantly use. The DVD is clear, well presented, goes into a lot of detail about the 4 effects included and is easy to understand. I was attracted to this effect because of how natural it looked in the demo and how free the movement of the performer was. As we all know some spectators like to think they can catch us out and watch our hand movements like hawks! Nothing that some good patter and misdirection wouldn’t usually solve, but with this effect the performer can move naturally and concentrate on the performance and stunning the spectators to silence. There is virtually no sleight of hand involved so this takes the heat and any of the suspicion off. The fact that when you’re hooked up you can perform at the drop of a hat ticks the boxes for me.

Effect 1 – Possession. I have a couple of ‘Haunted Deck’ effects my current favorite being Peter Egginks Haunted. I really rate this effect, but Kinetic kind of takes it to another level. I have performed possession numerous times now and I’ve had spectators actually believe that they have mystical magical powers from an unknown force. Imagine getting the spec to shuffle the cards then without you touching them asking them to offer another spectator a card. This really plays with them after because when they think back they knew they did the selecting etc and you had no real influence on anything. Then when you have performed the magical cut you can stop and ask them to believe they are pushing the deck (without touching it) and the top half of the cut falls to the table….then you get them to hold their hands out and the card ends up flying into their empty hands. I love this effect and it is beautiful for walk around as it instantly resets.

Effect 2 – Dead Rising. I’ve never really liked rising card effects although there are some good ones, this method has a slightly different spin on some that I have seen and used but requires a slightly different set-up than the other 3 effects, for this reason I probably won’t perform this much.

Effect 3 – Telekinetic Note. I really love this effect and like possession it gets great reactions. It’s really simple to perform although the ending where the note flies into your waiting hand will require practice to look natural and smooth without revealing to the spectator or adding suspicion to ruin a great trick. You kind of fool yourself when you are performing this as it is really convincing to anyone watching that the can see an object of theirs levitating in a previously inspected glass which is covered at the top?? Awesome.

Effect 4 – The Gift. I have not yet been brave enough to try this effect on anyone as it also requires a decent amount of practice to look natural and smooth I’m nearly there though (I suppose a note flying from a specs hand to yours isn’t a natural thing but you know what I mean lol) with a little more practice I can’t wait to work this effect.

Positives: Clever, easy to master, good clear DVD and instructions, instantly resets, 2 precision made gimmicks one for performance one for practice, although I’m still using the first one and have one spare for when needed, ideal for walk around.

Negatives: Cost maybe? Personally I’m really struggling to find anything negative about this, I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it is definitely worth a look if you’re looking for an easy well thought out effect that gets great spectator reactions.

Verdict (1-10) 9. It definitely won’t stay in the bottom drawer.
I can honestly say that I don’t know Tom Wright personally nor am I involved with any sort of promotion for this product, I just really like it. The possibilities are not limited to the 4 effects offered if you are creative. I’d love to hear the view from anyone else who owns this product to see if they agree.
Hope this helps.

Fantastic review, Daz - thanks for that; I'm now struggling with CUPS over this, so I suspect my wife would like to thank you also... With a frying pan
