i've never done magic but would really love to learn the art. I think its amazing but don't really know where to start learning. If people could help me or tell me some good beginner magic books/dvds. I've been in a local magic shop a few times and just keeps trying to get me to go on a course which is super expensive. Anyway any help would be much appreciated.
thanks

Welcome!

Get a deck of cards and four two pound coins (or US half dollars)

Then get

Royal Road to Card a Magic
Modern Coin Magic
Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic

Then hang out here...

Cheers

Todd

Hiya and welcome along to TM.

I'll second Mark Wilson's Complete Course as a great book to get you started. :D

A huge welcome :D

Forget the Magic Shop course; not only will them make you pay through the nose for tuition which may or may not be suited to you - they'll also most likely pressure you to buy their effects as 'an essential part of your training'

The three books already suggested can be picked up for less than £25, and will give you far more of a grounding in the most important magical techniques than you'd ever get from any course!

Keep us informed of how you get on!

Welcome to TM and the wonderful art of magic!

I'd echo the warning about paying for courses at this stage, there are some good ones but you'd be the best one to decide about them once you've learned some of the basics and had some fun with the stuff in the books mentioned. In fact, Mark Wilson's book contains enough material for whole careers in magic and it doesn't cost the earth. If you have a branch of The Works in your locality, check them out from time to time as there are some great magic books offered there at very low prices. Anything by Nic Einhorn is worth having, very pictorial and well described - and Nic's one of the hardest working professionals in magic these days.
