Personal videos

Postby Mark Wynn » Mar 29th, '13, 16:51

For the past few years I have made several short videos of effects I use. These are placed on You Tube and other similar sites. Generally these are to show colleagues in distant places what I do and we exchange similar videos. Sometimes my 'works of art' are put onto a certain website. Normally with no explanation of the effects working. I think that at times other people put their videos here but I don't know if there are any actual rules on this.

However, here is a link to one of my recent videos and no doubt I will get feedback of one sort or another on the actual effect and whether it's correct to put it here.

Cheers. Mark

I absolutly love this, you are a credit to the brotherhood. You took an effect that most would play around with, show a few people and the effect would end up discarded at the bottom of the junk drawer. I used to sell Emerson and West's 'Whole Card' by the dozens and yet nobody ever did much with it. You did something with it, you made it entertaining. My handling would be much different than yours but who cares? I constantly preach that an effect is what you make of it, this was fun to watch and I hope to see more.

Thant's kind of you Brian. I might show others. Is there a 'correct' proceedure for doing an explanation on video? Mark

Thank you Mark! There are no rules as such, other than the general idea of TM rules & regs, but the Forum of Visual Curiosities is probably a better home so I've moved this thread into there.

Just shows how much older I am that most of you. Joking aside, there is so much good good material from past times that is overlooked, and many folk are only interested in the latest 'must have' effect advertised that soon finishes up at the back of the drawer.

Your kind words might tempt me into showing some more in due course. Mark.

Thank you for stressing this, there's a positive wealth of excellent ideas and routines in 'old' books and overlooking them many magicians are missing out on a very rich source of material - at bargain prices!

Here is another very good item from the effects I still regularly perform. Goes back many years of course. It interests lay folk because the mention of marked cards etc. always gets their attention. The climax is visual and even in the most difficult performing conditions can be appreciated.
I will mention that I have never been a clever card man and just the basics from the 'Royal Road' have served me well all these years.
Always pleased to get your comments.

march 13th was the last time I visited this post? Where has the time gone. I remember this effect. I'm glad you are having success with it. I see a basic problem with the effect itself so right off the bat I have issues, however it is not necessarily in your handling. I believe it is in the original routine.

For the most part you only openly display 3 cards, one face up between the the two face down. Yet the count clearly shows at least four cards, (I don't know how many there are) and then you end up with a poker hand. The extra cards don't really have an explanation in my view.

You have been performing this successfully for 25 years I believe? Then I wouldn't change it because I am one of those who doesn't like to argue with success.

If somebody new wanted to take this on I would recomend changing the display's to an Ascanio count and display.

I like your relaxed performing style. And I very much enjoy watching you perform for quite a variety of reasons.

I am so flattered when forum members make nice comments. (Can you see me blushing?) Anyhow it's appreciated. I occasionally mention how long I have been presenting some of my regular effects so that must give you some idea that I'm really 'getting on'. I sometimes think I'm on the second time around with my years. However I can truthfully say I'm sill working close-up gigs when folk want me. (Perhaps I'm just cheap - Not blooming likely).

Not being a clever chap, the majority of the effects I use are easy-peazy, but I do try to be entertaining in all I do. In my mind that's the important factor.

Here is a video of another effect I use - not at every gig - but certainly regularly. In the video the prop is on the table but most certainly it has a great effect if presented on a lady's hand. No explanation is given ('cos it's not mine to give really). It won't baffle most of you - easy to work out, but again I say IT'S THE EFFECT THAT COUNTS. See what you think. may be easy peasy but so what, you are in good company. I believe I saw Paul Daniels do the same trick many years ago. Again well done.
