what I learned about combining effects

Postby seymourmagic » Apr 30th, '13, 15:21

When I was doing close up and card magic, at some point I realised that combining the tricks, rather than just following them one after the other, made for a better trick. Not all tricks are combinable but some are. Example, a signed coin vanish from inside a closed box in specs hand(rattle box) could be done as a stand alone trick, but combining it with a nest of boxes inside a locked (watch) box; (both of wich can be stand alone effects) makes for a better trick. Not sure if I did well at explaining what I'm meaning but hopefully it's well eneough to get a point across, only trying to be helpful to newcomers to the art. Lately I have been studying and practicing some stage effects, and have discovered the same theory applies when it comes to combining effects. Using strong IT, I would do my version of the haunted hank, then it occured to me, if I used the same hank I could levitate the candle (actually the hank) all around before having the candle vanish.
the candle is lit then covered by the hank that has a hole in the center, allowing the wick to stick through and the flame to still be visible while the candle is covered. Using the IT in the same way as I did for haunted hank< I could then levitate the covered candle (after extinguishing the flame) all around before wisking away the hank to reveal the candle just vanished in mid air!, a bit of handling and practice required but a nice effect when done properly. This is all something I discovered by thinking about what effects could I combine. I apologise for my run on sentences, punctuations, and grammer, relaying my ideas and thoughts in written words, is not my strong suit. in Summary some tricks combine well, some dont combine at all but flow well. Think about the flow. If I produce three colored silks from a cane I don't just tuck them away and move on to something else, I'll use them to produce a parasol. Think about combining, like I did with haunted hank and vanishing candle, creating the floating vanishing candle; and think about the flow ie.. cane to silk, silk to parasol, parasol to multiplying parsols...get the picture :) just something to think about if your just starting in magic. "good advice", "Bravo", "well said", (I'm patting myself on the back)
May your everyday be magical!
