Richard Osterlind's DESIGN DUPLICATION SYSTEM

Available from http://www.my-magicshop.com

Powerful design duplication with no gimmicks. No fooling!

Richard Osterlind's DESIGN DUPLICATION SYSTEM caused quite a sensation last year when it first saw print in ESSAYS and now, all of the components have been specially produced for you to put this miracle of thought projection into your act almost immediately.

Here's what the audience sees: The mentalist displays a stack of cards with the names of different objects written on them. A spectator freely chooses one and can change his mind if he wishes. He is now given a pad and asked to draw a picture of his object. The mentalist also takes a pad and draws a design on his from across the room. When the two pictures are compared, they are almost identical!

You receive the special set of cards, printed on quality, glossy stock and a booklet outlining the complete routine. Remember that this is not just a method - it's a system that you'll find easy to adapt to your own personal style of performing that utilizes one of the most diabolically subtle principles in mentalism.

Cost
19 Euros or about £13

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

1 Easy - some things to memorise but not too taxing.

Review
I say: I like this a lot. If you want to do a design duplication effect and you don't want to be peeking at an image on a pad, then this could be the answer. The spec selects from a choice of items to draw and draws it on their own pad, which they hang onto at all times. The mentalist leaves the room and makes his own drawing on his own pad. When the mentalist returns the two pads are compared.

The items have been carefully chosen so that when you, the mentalist draw the equivalent item, there is a very strong chance that you will quite naturally draw it in a very similar way. This is almost as impressive as you knowing the item selected in the first place. I've had experienced specs getting to the solution of how I know which item to draw (eventually - the principle is familiar to magi but a lay person wouldn't twig) but then being baffled by the way the two drawings are so similar (which is all down to lady luck and the initial choice of items).

Overall
9/10

I've just treated myself to "Essays" and I must say this is quite the "dog's dooh-dahs"!

The principle is not Earth Shattering and appears in a number of effects..

BUT...

...the subtlties Richard Osterlind adds and the psycological nuances are pure genius!

I'm making my own but I could imagine the cards are sweet and either way, if you want to do duplication mentalism...WOW..you will have quite the ammunition with this!

I have to confess I love Richard Osterlinds work.

Where did you get Essay's from? Was it Richards site? or did you buy from the UK. Also, is there much else in the Essays as well as the ODDS?

I got it straight from his site.

ODDS is the main effect in it, the rest is a series of his views on how one presents oneself in magic/mentalism etc to be effective and to make the most of what one does for everybody concerned. His views on mixing magic and mentalism is in there as well as his direct responses to the usual "if you are a mindreader why do you need cards" (or similar) comments made by smart alec performers looking for "the answer" to being the perfect mentalist! LOL!

A good read!

I bought this recently, only one complaint... its not very UK friendly. Those who have it will know what I mean! I have made some alterations and apart from that its perfect!

may not be uk friendly for some items, but they are easily changeable. especially if you write your own

I agree totally with midge. I did write my own and several of the words I changed, not just because they weren't UK friendly. That I could live with, but I also wanted to make some of the words less obvious.

(pm me for more details)

I don't mind the US element, but it's not an issue - easy to change.
This is a great effect.
Simple, clever, neat. No wires, pulleys, stooges etc. - just great.
Piers.

..i got this over the weekend and tried it out - it's fantastic!

the word picked was grapes...and luckily we had both drawn the same number of grapes which i obviously made a huge fuss over, and two little leaves at the top...

...ahhhh, it seems women in particular like this effect, i got three kisses at the end of a little show round a mate's house (thankfully they were all from women) for entertaining them...now that's magic...

That's one of the best reasons for doing magic - never mind the money as long as you get a snog!

For anyone who might not wish to buy a separate effect, the system is detailed in volume 7 of Richard's 'Mind Mysteries' DVDs (confusingly entitled 'Mind Mysteries Too', even though they didn't restart the volume numbers).

Fully agree with Part-timer. Volume 7 is a great DVD!! It includes also the Q&A act which for me is a high-light if you are interested in mentalism. You will also get a few card tricks + other great mentalism.

I would not hesitate ordering the "Essays" from his web-site (downlowd at 25 $).

He is a gifted writer, and even if DVD is great I think the words and reflection adds a lot to the routine.
The DDS is a system and can be adapted to any languiage and also to other prediction routines ones you understand the fairly simple logic behind it.

All of this would normally be available through Alakazam in the UK too

To make up yourself or buy ready made?

Postby NeilS » Nov 24th, '07, 21:00

Having seen all the great comments about ODDS I am about to purchase it, but here's the question.

I can get the effect in Essays and make the effect up myself (noting that I might have to change some words to make them UK friendly) or buy the effect ready made up with laminated cards etc from a dealer.

If I did the latter, would I still have problems wih possibly non UK friendly words? And if so, would the best approach to make the effect up myself?

Any guidance please would be welcome.

Thanks

NeilS
