The advertising blurb

Miracles without Moves features seven jawdroppingly incredible slices of card magic that require the barest minimum of sleight of hand.

Eschewing technical knucklebusting moves for ingenious trickery, routining and plain old sneaky clever thinking Ryan Schlutz unleashes tricks that will utterly floor your audience yet are simple and fun to perform.

And these are not your run of the mill sleight-lite routines. No painful counting sequences, yawn inducing spelling or hard-to-master linguistic gymnastics. These are multi layered, supremely FOOLING smashers.

Seven truly incredibly routines that require NO complicated sleight of hand - Yep, that means it's well suitable for the beginner!

'These effects not only fooled me but totally inspired me with their deceptive creativity. Unreservedly recommended.' Jamie Badman

'Ryan has great instinct for creating fooling magic with devious simplicity. These effects are easy to perform and hard to resist.' John Guastaferro

'Creating ONE trick that smashes an audience's mind without resorting to sleights is a challenge. How the hell Ryan Schlutz came up with SEVEN is totally beyond me. I had no idea how he did ANY of it!!!' Cameron Francis

'Want your *rse fooled off? Look no further. Schlutz is definitely your man!' Dave Forrest

'The last time I was this fooled by card magic, I was 10. Ryan made me feel like a child again.' James Went

'On this DVD you will see Ryan demonstrate powerful working material that is seriously fooling. Great construction and use of subtlety rather than heavy sleights gives you a powerful collection of material to add to your repertoire'. John Carey

'Ryan fooled me time and time again with the material from this DVD. The fact that most of it is almost self working is astonishing! This is surely set to become a modern classic!' Iain Moran

Review

I was hesitant in getting this disc, as I was rather disappointed with BBM's previous offering of Self Working Card tricks, Vol 2, and as far as value for money goes, it only has 7 tricks on it! Doesn't seem like much really... However, as I like card magic that doesn't rely on busting my knuckles, and instead focuses on performing it to make it magical for my spectator, and as Ryan gave us the stand out tricks on Self Working Vol 2, I thought I'd give it a go.

I'm rather pleased I did!

As always with Big Blind Media, the production values are excellent! Navigation through the disc is easy and clear, the music rocks and any odd little errors are cleared up with some nice, quirky subtitling!

So, on with the tricks...

Subconscious: To call this a spectator picks a card, looses it in the deck and the magician finds it, as something of an understatement! It's a great and effective piece of card magic! It'll take a little work to gimmick your deck, but once it's done, it'll live within the deck un-noticed until it's needed! (I made the necessary adjustments to my main "working" deck, and it really doesn't affect anything at all!) It's not a new technique, more a remembering of an old one, and it's superb! And as it's so easy, it's all down to your performance!

Four Shadowed: This is one of those four-of-a-kind revelations, and one of the best! I love the freedom the spectator has with picking the card initially, the very sneaky and simple forces involved, and Ryan's performance ideas for this. It needs a tiny bit of set up, but there's a brief discussion about setting it up on the go, so it can be used as a more spontaneous trick too!

Deconstructed Construction: In short, the spectator thinks of a card, and you reveal it! This is one I haven't tried performing yet, but I think it's a good one! Some very cunning yet fair card work in here!

Degrees Of Boredom: This, as the title suggests, is a combination of Aronsen's Shufflebored, and Bannon's Degrees of Freedom. With a pedigree like that, it has a lot to live up to... and it totally does! Whilst there's a bit of technical stuff to learn and remember, it's very do-able, and if you're prepared with your predictions, it can be done when ever you want! (There is set up, but it's so natural and fair that it's really not a problem!) I really don't like to praise tricks like this when I haven't road tested them, but I will make an exception for this! For me, Degrees of Boredom is one of the strongest pieces of magic on this disc.

It Cuts Deeper: A borrowed and shuffled deck is cut three times, and you know exactly what cards have been cut to! This is extremely simple to do! A great one to have tucked away at the back of the brain for those moments when you need an emergency card trick!

Methodical: Simply put, the spectator selects a card, and the magician finds it x 3! But it's so much more than that! This could be the best thing on this disc... It's from a borrowed and shuffled deck if need be. It's incredibly simple to do, and so effective! (I did it the other night to follow up Voodini's Hand of Destiny, and it got an amazing reaction!) It builds up beautifully, each phase getting progressively harder (from the spectators point of view, that is!) If ever that was an example needed of how it's not the trick, but the magician, this is it! For me, Methodical alone is worth the price of the disc!

1942: Similar to the opening trick, Subconscious, and it uses the same gimmick, plus a bit more! It's a very strong trick... but is it anything that Subconscious isn't? I'm not sure...

And that's it! All seven tricks!

Each one is well performed (and, as always, BBM has chosen some fine audience members to do magic on! Long gone are the days of Dave Forrest in a rabbit suit!) and the teaching is clear and extremely detailed. There's a lot to learn here, not just the tricks themselves, but the performance, the interaction with the people your doing the magic for, how this can make such simple tricks into astounding pieces of magic!

Overall

This disc is up with the best that Big Blind Media has to offer! It's an excellent disc of magic! All strong, and all usable! If I have any criticism with this, it's that there's only seven tricks on it... But it does mean that there really is no filler! So don't let the fact that these are pretty easy to do tricks, as they're all professional quality pieces of card magic.

nice review.. do you think it would be suitable for a 10 year old just starting to get into card magic?

Thanks psymon!

But sadly, I don't think this is quite right for a 10 year old... Despite being move free, there's still a lot going on... Its certainly not beginners material.

thanks for your input

my daughter is really digging the magic right now, she's definitely beyond those cheap magic 'kits' they have for kids, and most books on magic geared towards kids I've come across... so I'm looking for something that's a step up from kids stuff, but still easy enough that she wont get scared away by it being too technical... any suggestions?

How old is your daughter, Psymon? Can I suggest Mark Wilson's Complete Course?

Sounds a good concept, just the barest sleight of hand to eliminate all the counting type tricks that I don't really like.
