After experimenting with it can be a great trick. I've heard some pros use it even. It's visual and seems baffling and is impromptu. With good patter it can really stun audience, with wrong patter it can be worked out though as once that did happen. But it's my favourite self worker. Second one I like is out of this world which despite the pre ordering of the deck is still great. Any others that people can point me towards?

out of curiosity, why does it have to be self working? if your looking for tricks that are simple and can be done with ease there are many simple tricks that use little in the way of complex flourishes, moves or sleight of hand. may I suggest that you give others here an idea of how your skill level rates.

S&D looks great. Not sure I need any more personally, I now have around ten easy routines to complement my "arsenal" of more difficult stuff. Though I'm sure there'll be others who find this thread useful, so keep 'em coming!

don't forget TNT+Intuition from Giobbi's Light, it needs some setup but you can do it improptu. it kills laymen!

T.N.T. The magician reveals two cards chosen in a way that would seem to make this utterly impossible.

Intuition. Through the power of intuition, two spectators are able to separate the shuffled deck into red and black cards.

[loads of other tricks on there too]

I'm not good at learning from books generally. Though I expect self working card tricks are easy to learn from books, on the whole...

You could always look at the DVD, Automata, nine self working miracles, by Gary Jones & Chris Congreave, recently reviewed by me here

Already bought that one, personally; am using Metal Sheep, Card to Matchbox and the Cups & Balls. All totally awesome, and I was quite tempted by some of the others too. Highly recommended!

You can get into this one while you work but it takes quite a bit of extra patter and setup. I'd recommend you did it as an opener:-

Whilst the spiral principle is an excellent method, the money is well spent for the 'Beyond' effect which is an Out Of This World plot. It's a completely different take on the effect and an absolute stunner. If you opened with this, straight from the card box it will knock your audience over. Incredibly simple, self working, all you need to do is put your own spin on it. Well worth the money IMO.

while not self working having a stacked deck opens up a ton of simple effects. the classic to learn would be Si Stebbins.

Totally agree. Many great effects, seemingly impossible ones can be acheived using a stacked / memorised deck. It's also not that difficult to acheive either so don't be put off by the prospect of memorising a stacked deck.

You may also want to try the Martin Joyal Stack system:-

This is the system I use and it is very easy to use and extremely good value for money.

I have a memorised deck. The only problem is, I can't remember it.

Another vote here for any variation of a stack. Casual false cuts and shuffles work wonders.

recently i've attended to a lecture on memorized decks, and it was simply astonishing. that's real magic, it is really worth to learn one (I'm studying mnemonica), and for me memorized decks are supercharged self working tricks.

To me, self-working tricks are the hardest, because, like memorized decks, you need to be able to remember stuff. To me, the easiest tricks are purely sleight based, like Ring on a String or most rope magic. The moves might in some cases be hard to learn but it's like riding a bicycle, once you can do it, you can pretty much always do it. Which is confusing because I think sometimes people say 'self-working' as a way of saying 'easy'.

I do internet to memorise another deck though. I have a mnemonic system, an image for each number from 01 to 99. 9=G, so for 99 I picture a pair of goGGles. I think I based it on something I read in a Derren Brown book. Of course, the first fifty two images can be used for cards, it's just a question of also having an image for each card. Which I don't have at present.
