Hello Fellow Magicians!
I am happy to join this forum and share in the discussion of magic. In terms of skill level, I am definitely just a hobbyist; however, I like to think that I have a fairly well-rounded knowledge base.
I remember that one of the very first tricks I ever saw as a child was when a friend of mine used a handkerchief to make a coin disappear. I later found out that he had simply used a rubber band to create a pocket in order to hold the coin from falling out of the handkerchief. It's been many years since that time and magic has been in my life on and off. I didn't start to study magic seriously until the last two or so years.
Like many others (and not to sound cliche), I was inspired by Derren Brown. He really inspired me to explore mentalism. I did almost exclusively card magic because that was what was available to me from magic shops and library books. However, I liked the seemingly intellectual component of mentalism and it seemed like a better fit for me since was much older and more mature as well. I don't think I could have really appreciated mentalism as a kid.
Within the mentalism realm, I really enjoy thinking about book tests and reading about the clever ways magicians have devised in order to give the effect of mind-reading. I also enjoy metal bending. In particular, I enjoy coin bends. I find that the secret is really in the acting and the theatre of an effect that really sells the trick. This is fascinating to me.
In any event, I look forward to reading some interesting posts and hopefully being able to contribute as well.
Cheers!
