I recommend you read a few books on audience management and/or how to approach people. Some psychology books and studies can be useful too, even for everyday life.

Try to perform for your family and friends first; confidence will come progressively...

Coin vanish,
Silk production (may be cheesy, but you get a response even if its a mate or just some random in a pub, club, cadets, whatever).
Simple card trick,
Float something,
etc

Yup..and remember your the only one who knows how the trick works, so dont be paranoid of the other person knowing how its done - be careful but not paranoid. If you get what i mean...?

Thanks for the pointers, I showed my boss CMH and Card Warp today, not a stranger but a start!! he was puzzled... it felt good :D
i must have done CMH about 5 times then he said you must be swapping the bands.... so then i went onto phase 2... one band on his thumbs!!!

Good recovery, I do this effect all the time in my group to group situations! I do it slow motion and on the spectators own hands and they still can't see how its done, however I never do it more than 3 times to the same group!

Once on my hands and again more slowly and then on a spectators hands....finish. Let them guess how it's done but remind them that swapping bands is not possible as the band that penetrates is on one hand at the start of the trick and still on one hand at the end! Then do it on their hands and that will fry them and finish the effect here or go onto another band trick if you wish!

If you practice this effect until you can do it slowly then you shouldn't get any comeback! :)
