Hello there.

This is the interesting (and exploitable) thing: Note the difference in audience reaction between a man potentially blowing his own brains out of his own volition and him actively toying with what might be the audience's most deeply held beliefs. They watch but are powerless to stop him. They complain to hit back. There's a simple reason for this:

Beliefs we form ourself have more validity than those we receive, even if they show our internal state to be at odds with reality. This is cool in itself, but hence people react with revulsion to debunks. When accompanied by "proof", there's a tendency even to defend.

Strange, but true.

I watched the derren brown show on friday, and at first I thought the zombie effect was a bit too much. Yes I too would have probably screamed like a girl! But then I started thinking about it...surely the lad must have given permision for derren to do the effect on him prior to recording. Otherwise derren could have really upset someone, and be left facing a kidnap and false imprisonment charge.

I agree.

What would've happened if that chap that played the machine had been epileptic or had any other medical problems? Was that a risk Derren was willing to take?

There is something not right here!

there was a lot of staff to help if things went wrong, I'm sure if he did have medical problems he would have been ok, the stretcher could have been used for more than taking him to the factory.
I agree, this series isn't as good, the last episode only had two different episodes, i like it when he is more involved with the public, i can then refer to their reactions

I really can't see derren even considering the possibility of this happening. I have just read absolute magic for the second, and he was appalled with himself for making someones ring appear in his sock, never mind hospitalising them!

Eeuch. I really didn't like the zombie effect - I think it's just not fair on the victim. There are so many things that can go wrong...I think that Derren must have asked him before. And then, think about what it would be like if you were one of this guy's friends, and he suddenly collapses, then a guy comes out of a side door, puts him on a stretcher, and carries him over to another building - I would have called the police! And if you think about it, going into the game like that could have been quite traumatic - what if the victim was permanently affected?!

Definitely not a good one Derren.

But hes an expert in psycological and neural affairs, so he would have accounted and realised the problems of permanent affection, but because the victim's brain was under so much pressure before he was re-awoken it would have been extremely hard for him to even remember it.

I agree. You saw the guys reaction afterwards, I think he probably told his friends while he was playing the game what was going to happen so they didnt freak out, and as for him he wouldnt of been effected to much because he was talking to derren afterwards, got to learn how it worked and got to see from many angles how it happened, got to drink with the "zombies" afterwards so it was all done in a way which probably made it exciting and cool afterwards for the guy but very scary during it, not to mention i doubt he randomly chose the person to perform this on, he would of had a large choice of people and did a good job of telling who would react well but not compleatly flip out and break down in tears.

Hey - what about the book test Derren performed on Friday night's show?!!! Amazing! Fathomed out the card tricks he did - which were cool anyway, but the book test one has got me thinking!

If you have it on video - then it is well worth playing the book test over again a few times. For once he hasn't edited out a lot of the moves..

There is a derren brown special on this sunday on channel four at ten oclock called the gathering. I hadn't heard anything about this until the last couple of days, since when channel four have been constantly advertising it.
Does anyone know what it is all about. It looks like it could be his live stage show in front of a celebrity audience.

They wouldn't do that until his run at the Cambridge theatre is over would they? I can't see Derren doing it, considering that last year he asked his audience to not even talk about the second act with people who might come to see it, surely this would be a much bigger spoiler.

Damn, now I don't know if I should watch it just in case it spoils the live show!
