Review

I bought this DVD because of the sales blurb and the reviews on the sales page. I wish I hadn’t !

Capeheart is a great street magician and his handling of misers dream, linking rings and cards is excellent. He is a great street magician which is where he excels.

However, I wouldn’t call him a kids entertainer. His style is too aggressive, he treats the kids poorly and keeps making false promises to them throughout the show. He belittles the kids and blames them for doing the trick ‘wrong’. He doesn’t use their names, even when he asks them their names, and just refers to them as ‘kid’, he keeps promising that they will win a $100 or an x-box etc. if they can figure out how he does things, then he leads them up the garden path making them think they are going to win and shoots them down at the end etc. A lot of his effects are ‘sucker’ effects.

After watching the DVDs I was left wondering if he actually did many kids shows at all. I certainly wouldn’t book him.

Anyone want the set ? I’m selling.

Overall: 1 out of 10

A very expensive DVD set. I have seen Chris lecture live and his misers dream and linking rings are fantastic, but not explained on this DVD. If you want to learn how to entertain kids don’t waste your money here (unless you want to buy them from me).

Thanks Mandrake - the selling comment was tongue in cheek. I don't like to be so negative about performers usually, especially as Chris is so great on the street, but this was a very expensive DVD set that I expected a lot from and was a little appalled by unfortunately.

No worries, the humour came through extremely well!

I saw Chris at Blackpool yonks ago and he was superb, street magic of the highest order and lots of useful tips and advice. Sadly it seems as though children's magic isn't his strong point. David Williamson is one performer who can get away with seeming to treat kids badly but never causes real offence. Best of luck with selling your DVDs  !

This is a timely warning thank you. I am still searching for a really good piece of work, either printed or electronic, on childrens magic and am still struggling. I have developed an act of my own which gets me some party gigs but I would like to get my teeth in to something really solid in this area to give me the confidence to relly market myself as a childrens entertainer

Johnny - Excellent value for money DVDs I would recommend are Terry Herbert's 'Magic for Under 5s' (most of the stuff actually plays well for up to 7 years of age) and 'Magic Ten' by David Ginn. If you have never done kids shows then a good book is 'Seriously Silly' by David Kaye (Silly Billy) - it's expensive at £40 and not a thick book of routines but rather tells you how to put together a funny kids show for different age groups.

Also have a look at all the demos on the David Ginn website and the practical magic website which will give you a good idea of tricks and how they play. Also have a look at Youtube at all of Tommy James, David Ginn, Silly Billy and Terry Herbert routines. That should be enough to give you a LOT of good tips, advice, routines and ideas

Echoing the recommendation for the Silly Billy book. I'd add that "A Pocketful of Magic" by Tony Baloney is also a good DVD to crib ideas from.
