Colin Mcleod presents ‘Divine’

For the first time, Colin shares not just his methods, but his entire process on how he’s able to create things in the unique way that he does. From learning how to use the Multi-Dimensional Die to reveal the exact memories of spectators to performing a guaranteed ‘Bank Note in Hand’ style routine, without the requirement for any fancy electronics, you’ll be gaining a personal insight displaying why he has gained a reputation for …

He teaches his real world routines with a deck of cards. Learn to perform ‘The Tossed Out Deck’ where people merely think of cards. Memorise a deck of cards in less than 2 minutes and have the entire audience take part in testing you know which card was at which number and in a short essay, you’ll even learn how to lay two cards face down and have the spectator’s correctly name them.

You’ll learn the up to date work on his Q&A routine with nothing held back, his unique perspective on Mental Epic and how to make it play BIG to a real world audience.

As well as these, Colin will reveal for the first time his opening routine for close up situations to ensure everyone is engaged and gets involved AND his ‘head line prediction’ methodology where you not only accurately predict any real world event, the event organiser also predicts what you’ve predicted. This is something that has never been shared before and will instantly become the cleanest way of making predictions in advance.

The book is laid out as a series of essays and as well as learning everything above, you’ll be learning some of the uses developed for the ‘Dunninger Ploy,’ this section alone contains a multitude of extra effects to consider, an essay on making billets psychologically invisible and a question and answer session with Peter Turner where we’ll find out exactly how Colin perceives different areas of our craft.

There is also a chapter on the journey Colin has taken, the people he has met and the influences he has had to guide him to this current point in his career. By the end of this book, you’ll know exactly who he is, exactly how he thinks and exactly how his thinking, his methodologies and his principles can and will benefit you.

And that’s not even half of the book.

Review
Where to begin? Some highlights:

Never Judge A Book By Its Cover... – I do! - OK, this book looks great, it is very well made, it has a nice simple cover.

Contents - 25 entries in the contents page

Welcome - Colin welcomes you to the book, this sets the tone for the rest of the book and contains plenty of excellent advice. The book has a very conversational tone, I felt like i was sitting in a pub with Colin and having a discussion. Colin seems very friendly and very helpful, he turns the questions to you, asking for your input. I found it very difficult to put this book down, I've read it in about 2 weeks, took loads of basic notes which I will now use to help me navigate for my second reading.

By Association - An excellent start! What a fantastic routine. Essentially a group of spectators play word association and you have predicted the final word. Colin explains his excellent reasoning for this routine. Some great theory here.

Here Comes Someone - Tossed Out Deck but with ordinary cards, except this routine will involve loads of your audience. Included is some interesting discussion on the use of playing cards in mentalism.

Memorised Deck - Wow! I love the thinking behind this, a real "Why didn't I think of that" moment for me.

The Dunninger Ploy - This essay on the Dunninger Ploy probably got my creative side working more than any other part of the book. It was very eye opening, I want to use this somehow, somewhere - I'll need to get working! This is one of the highlights.

Perfect Prediction - This is beautiful, imagine a coin in hand routine turned completely on its head...

Noted - 4 notes, 1 £50 and 3 £5 notes. 4 spectators each take and hide a note, you find out who has the £50... but then you start revealing each spectators memories!

Additional Thoughts - Definitely another highlight! I won't tell you what happens, you shouldn't even read it until you've seen it performed - buy Colin's Penguin lecture and watch the performances before reading this.

Billet Ballet - Advice and thoughts on handling billets. I made a tonne of notes on this, some really interesting thoughts. I don't agree with some of it, and sometimes feel Colin disagrees with himself but there are a lot of ideas and thoughts here which I had just never considered.

My Journey So Far - This was a fascinating read, it left me wanting more. Colin hints at having had lots of fun adventures and experiences with other mentalists and performers... I wanted to hear those stories!

Overall

This book is an amazing insight into Colin's creative process, his way of thinking and views on mentalism. I'd say it has definitely given me loads of food for thought and has/will change my approach to certain areas.
It is certainly worth the price, on a first read through I take very basic notes, with the intention of expanding on areas as i read through again. I've already filled 10 a4 pages with these basic notes and initial thoughts and I've highlighted more than half of my notes as something I want to explore further, take on board, or learn.
I love books which have a conversational tone, as I was reading I felt like I was really getting to know Colin, and strangely I felt like he was getting to know me. It's left me wanting more.

10/10
