It seems that this trick hasn't been covered yet, so here it goes:

The Effect

http://www.penguinmagic.com/europe/product.php?ID=657

The spectator shuffles the deck and cuts it into two piles.

The spectator gets a free choice of the two piles... whichever one the spectator picks is the one used...

Using the chosen pile, the magician offers the spectator a look at the cards one-by-one. Without tipping off the magician, the spectator thinks of a card and notes its position.

Now, the other pile is spread out and the spectator is instructed to push out any card from that pile. Without looking at this selection it is placed in the magician's pocket. We don't know which card the second card is, but we know it cannot possibly be the first selection because it is from an entirely different pile.

The spectator names the originally selected card. Magically it has vanished from its place in it's pile and has jumped to the magician's pocket.

Cost

EURO 5.86, £3.89 ($6.95)

Difficulty

3/5

(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Review

The trick is wonderful. It can be performed with a borrowed deck, in which case the reaction is even better. Althought some basic sleights are used, it is really easy to perform (took me only a quarter of an hour to master it). Once the card is removed from the pocket, spectators simply cannot believe it, it looks impossible. Yet it is so simple. I definitely recommend it. Can't even think of any drawbacks. No gimmicks, gaffs, etc are used.

9/10

Thanks for the great review El Topo. It sounds like a nice effect - and refreshingly cheap as well...

In fairness, most people on these forums are magicians, but youre right - that is a cool trick. I just watched that video, and yeah - I worked out how it was done - but my family were amazed by it! I certainly wouldn't have thought of it by myself.

To laymen this looks like a miracle and don't forget with a video you can watch it again and again and scrutinize details, you show laymen this once they won't have any idea how its done.

By the way its a nice trick i love it.

Sounds really nice! Bold and simple effects presented well can always impress an audience.

I concur wholeheartedly with the comment on videos. The whole point we do not repeat our effects is to create that one-off moment of magic that inspires the audience.

Just saw Fay Presto last week at our regular magic meeting, and she has been doing 'off the shelf' effects for dinner magic for over 20 years. The guest audience at her lecture demonstration had their chins on the floor for most of the act. It was a joy to see her work and the effect that she had on the audience. She did video the performance and then played it back, which was a great pedagogical tool. Even the most seasoned of magicians learned something from her.

Bought this the other day

Postby stevehb » Aug 30th, '06, 21:43

Hi

I bought this the other day and (because I'm a goof with my hands) I am still practising the required moves!

BUT I just want to say that I got it from penguinmagic.com and the best bit for me has been having access to the penguin forums where I have already seen ways of changing the trick especially one post which details how to perform the same trick as shown in the video but with a slight change that leaves you completely clean at the end.

A nice trick which a beginner like me is getting comfortable with and which as a "first" card trick has also started to teach me some basics that I have no doubt I will be able to re-use with other tricks!

this is a nice trick which i worked out from the video. i performed it and i amazed my classmates and even teachers. but recently when i performed it one of my friends came up to me and said, " hey i know how you did that i saw the explanation on youtube." cant anyone just stop people from posting magic tutorials for free on youtube.. especially those which they did not make themselves. im getting pi**ed at them

and another offender of exposing magic is wikipedia. Someone should email both of them and ask them to remove anything that would be considered exposure

yes and we need some qualified magician who can actually represent magicians and do that. sometimes some small cahracter just wont convince or scare them. this is why they have no respect for people who earn their livings by performing magic. wikipedia and youtube are vry "big and famous" websites and thus i can only hope some important character from the magic circle is kind enough to inform them about exposure. giving an introductory to magic is fine but exposing secrets great magicians in the past have tried to protect is totally wrong, even though it may not be a wonderful effect in this modern society

They should completely remove the youtube videos exposing tricks but just performing them is okay and the wikipedia pages should just contain a synopsis of the trick and who created it but not expose it and have if you want to learn it buy this book or dvd
I think if enough people email them to complain they will have to do something. It would be a shame if magic died out because it was exposed all over the internet.

This is great. Thanks for the review. Such good value. I used this in a cabaret type setting last week but this is one of those tricks that once mastered, you have a powerful impromptu trick for those times when someone pulls out a pack of cards, shuffles it and says 'can you show me a trick'.
