The Effect

Mesmerize. Captivate. Entrance. With nothing but your words. The future of mentalism is here. "The trick Peter Turner has pulled off is making magicians believe his miracles have no method. He makes us believe he truly has supernatural powers... at least that's what I thought when I first met him. His magic is hard enough just to BELIEVE, let alone explain. And I'm not alone. Legendary entertainers like Uri Geller and Kenton Knepper have been fascinated with how innovative Peter's modern approach is. "There is no doubt in my mind that he will fascinate you" -Uri Geller "One of the most natural, realistic mentalists of our time, that I'm proud to call my student." -Kenton Knepper Drawing equally from mentalism and psychology, Peter spins together routines that delight as much as they frustrate. From guessing the exact date of someones birth, to the location of an imaginary object, you will know things that have never even been spoken. Routines Included: Wish You Were Here After having your spectator merely IMAGINE a destination in the world, you read their thoughts. Which Hand The oldest game of chance in the world, played with an imaginary coin. Not only do you know which hand is hiding the imaginary coin, but the date on it. Lie To Me Become a human lie detector. Rain Man Using a borrowed phone book you demonstrate your super human memory. A Gift From Me To You Transfer your powers to a spectator and show them what it feels like to be a mind reader. Trust Your Instincts Peter's BRILLIANT approach to Any Card At Any Number. IPI A practical way to put a spectator under a trance. Mind Plant One spectator reads another spectator's mind on stage. Isabella's Star Correctly divine a spectators birth date in the most direct way. It looks so real it's scary. Peter also shares invaluable performance tips, and his work with progressive anagrams and so much more. Running time: 3 hours.

Review

“Make it life changing, make it inspiring!” (Peter Turner)

This is one of thise DVD’s that I didn’t want to review. Some things in magic should be kept secret... But this is a big release, and unlike a lot of Peters other work, is freely available at a reasonable price.

What do you get for your money then? It’s a cardboard slip case that holds two DVD’s. Each DVD is well filmed and has Peter performing 4 or 5 routines and then explaining how to do them. I’m going to repeat myself further along in this review, but right from the outset... the amount information given on here is staggering!

Disc One

Wish You Were Here: Your assistant imagines a landscape, and you describe it to them. This is the first routine from here that I used, and although it’s not the strongest routine, it’s still very nice, and possibly the easiest thing on here to do. It’s billetless, and the structure of it is beautiful. The explanation here is over twenty minutes long! There is just so much information on this disc... Peter talks in amazing depth about Psy forces, and restricting peoples choices.

Which Hand: This is a which hand is the coin in routine, with an imaginary coin, which you then go on to reveal the value of the coin the person is imagining, and then the date! This is one of the things that I really wanted to learn from here. I use Coinvexed a lot, and figured this could fit in very nicely! Again, the explanation is very expansive and detailed. It’s not the simplest thing to do, but it is very do-able. (And great fun to practice on your friends, before taking it out into the real world!) Also, when I watched this for the first time, I followed along with it, and my imaginary coin was exactly where it should be!

Lie To Me: This is a great way to tell if people are lying. I’ve been using a version of this technique since I started doing magic, but this is far more reliable and effective. For me, this is the currently my favourite piece on here!

Rain Man: This is a memory test for a borrowed phone book. This isn't my favorite thing here, but the value of it is in the method that is taught, and Peter gives quite a few other applications for it!

A Gift From Me To You: You teach someone else how to read minds! I love this routine! I haven’t had the opportunity to use this yet, but it’s a great one to have stored away for the right moment. And also showing that cards can be used in mentailsm!

Disc Two

Trust Your Instincts: This is an ACAAN routine. The performance of this is great! How Peter takes a simple/classic card trick and makes it an emotionally relevant thing for the two helpers is beautiful!

IPI: Not a trick, but a way of getting a spectator to go into a trance. This is nice and theatrical, although I’m not sure why it’s here as a separate thing when there are so many other things that Peter talks about here that could also be separate things! Certainly though it’s a very usable way of making a performance more “real”

Mind Plant: A billetless drawing duplication. It relies on dual reality, and to be honest, it’s not my cup of tea. That said, if you like it and are comfortable performing it, I’m sure it’ll be very strong.

Isabella’s Star: For many people I’m sure this alone will be the selling point of the DVD, and rightly so. It’s a wonderfully pure way of divining someone’s date of birth! For me, as great as this is, the mathematics requires to do this smoothly are a little beyond me right now. That will change, but I want to get this right before I start performing it. (I’m also a little surprised that this is one here, as Isabella’s Star 2 is out as a stand alone piece) So, this will require some work, but it is rather amazing! I saw Peter perform this last year at the London festival of magic, and it was quite stunning.

Next up comes a section of Peter talking about mentalism, including the use of marked cards, memorising a deck of cards, progressive anagrams and doing readings.

What really makes this set so strong, beyond the routines, is Peters explanations. He gives so much information, so many ideas... It’s his way of thinking that makes this set so special. How he can make a simple routine and add small “hits” (like in "Wish you were here," for example “no people, and a warm place, a nice breeze”)

And for each routine, the explanation gives ways to enhance the experience for the spectator, such as how to pitch your reveal, and even other routines hidden away (Psy forces, for example. Just look at what he does with a simple force of Paris and the Eiffel tower!). Although billed as just 9 routines, the reality is that theres so many more on here as Peter goes into detail about what he does and how certain ideas could be used in other ways.

All of this is interspaced with bits filmed in a tattoo shop with Peter talking about mentalism in general and, quite simply, how to do it better. He talks about taking chances, gaining confidence, how to reveal information and dual reality.

Peter is continually stressing the importance of presentation in mentalism, to make it a more real and genuine experience for your spectator. In fact his closing lines are about how the performance is more important than the method, because the audience never sees the method...

Overal

This DVD isn’t for everyone. If you’re a cups and balls magician, then these routines may not fit into your set... However, when I do magic I perform with the basic concept that the magic doesn’t happen in my hands, but in the spectators head, and with that in mind, there’s so much information in here that just about anyone will be able to take something from this and Peters way of working to make magic more powerful and personal.

This double DVD set is something that you can keep returning to time and time again and will keep getting new things and ideas from, and should be an essential for any mentalist.
