Billet marking

Postby 10DD » Nov 17th, '14, 13:58

Hi,

I'm working on a couple of routines that utilise two billets folded into quarters.

I'm currently looking into a few ideas around marking systems and thought it was worth putting out there in case anyone had any suggestions (if you could respond via PM as opposed to replying within the thread it would be appreciated).

Ideally, the marking is distinguishable by sight from a short distance, while the participant is holding a folded billet in each hand.

Thanks

A nail nick is probably by far the easiest and cleanest way to do it.

I should have perhaps stated I am not fond of nail nicks, particularly on billets.

I have a problem with nail nicks too, particularly in spotting the nick without making it totally obvious.

I only use them in 1 piece, but I feel nervous every time i perform it that I won't be able to see the nick. Fortunately during the routine I place a lot of attention on each billet which gives me plenty of time to look at the other billets.

Lady of Mystery - do you have any tips on nail nicking to ensure that they won't be detected but can easily be seen by the magician?

I've used nail nicks for years and have never been caught out with them, I've even gotten them past magicians before. The easiest way is to nick a corner of the billet as you pass it to your spec, a nicked corner is much more visible than an edge.

Like most things in magic, if you draw too much attention to something then there's a chance that you'll get caught out. I don't know what your routine is but with most billet routines, the spec shouldn't be paying too much attention to the billet itself. The billet should be insignificant, the important thing is the information that's inside.
