The Spreadwave Force?

Postby thetribeofBen » Mar 9th, '15, 17:04

Hello all,
i have a question about a card force (maybe a force, but maybe not) that I saw Matthieu Bich a few years ago, but cannot get out of my head, it was during his spot on Penn and Tellers 'Fool us' in the United Kingdom, he used it in his 'Spreadwave' effect and I thought it was a fantastic way to get multiple audience members to collectively choose a card. He basically threw a beach ball into the audience and the first person thought of a colour (black or red) then they threw the ball to someone else and that person thought of a number, king or queen, then they also threw the ball and the last person thought of a suit, and all together they came up with a card, and I'm sure you know the rest of the effect, but I just cant get that process of choosing a card out of my mind!!

I may just be being dumb, but can anyone tell me where I might be able to learn to do this sort of card force or what I have to buy in order to do such a seemingly fair card force? I know that the deck of spread cards can only be one particular card, so this is why I am assuming that somehow it is a force of sorts.

Thanks for your help,

Ben.

Don't think it was a force was it? They would've seen straight through that. The trick is the deck.

I know that the deck is part of the trick, but how do you get the audience to choose the specific card that the deck eventually shows when spread? my only conclusion is that there is some sort of force surely, its just so clean and fair and there is no way that the deck could possible show any one of 52 different outcomes, so he must be utilising either a force or psychological influence to get them to arrive at that one card. I'm sounding more bonkers the further I try to explain what I mean!!

Spreadwave is still on sale, would it include a hint or two about the card selection process?

Out of curiosity I took a look not only at the effect. But the exact presentation of the effect which I found on youtube using a simple search. My advice is that you may want to purchase the effect because based on your question I don't think you fully understand what is going on.

If however you are not after the effect but just after the type of force you believe this to be then there are resoucrces I just can't remember where, could be in 13 steps to mentalism but can't be positive. But I seem to remember something similiar in a mentalism book.

Hi again, yes I am sure I am probably seeing a free choice, it just seems like it must be a force due to it having to be a specific card needed for the final revelation, so I'll check out 13 steps (I think I've got a copy somewhere) and I will purchase the effect too as I really do like it anyway!!
Thanks for the input so far,
Ben.

It's not a force - It's a completely free choice. The deck does the work.

Thanks guys for your help this far, I found out that what I was seeing was a free choice, I just didn't realise, and I have since got out my copy of 13 steps and there is a method that with a little modification I have managed to create a force that looks identical to the throwing out of the beach ball to have a card chosen by multiple audience members!!
Its funny that I thought he was using some sort of force, but now I see just how clever the effect is, I once again am blown away by the incredible thinking behind an effect!!
