Vaudeville Productions and Crook Productions team up ....to find the next great magician for ITV
From http://www.magicnews.org:

Derren Brown’s Vaudeville Productions and Crook Productions have been commissioned by ITV to co-produce a brand new magic competition show, The Next Great Magician (6 x 60’). Crook Productions is part of Andrew O’Connor and ITV Studios’ Cat’s On The Roof Media, and The Next Great Magician is Crook Productions’ first big entertainment commission since the group’s inception earlier this year.

The series will feature the world’s best magicians performing their greatest tricks, many of them for the first time ever on television, as they compete to be crowned The Next Great Magician. It will air on ITV next summer. Each episode will see five magicians perform their most sensational tricks, from close-up and comedy magic through to amazing illusions and incredible escapes, both in front of a studio audience and on location in front of astounded members of the public and celebrities. The magicians will judge each other’s performances, with each week’s highest-voted contestant going through to the final. In the grand live final, the five top magicians will perform even more astonishing new tricks in a battle to win a truly money-can’t-buy prize: their own television special on ITV.

Andrew O’Connor said: “Some of the world’s best magicians are hero-worshipped by their peers but are unknown to wider audiences, having never trusted a TV company to film them before. The Next Great Magician will see them perform their most remarkable tricks on TV and judge each other’s performances in what promises to be a mind-blowing and unmissable magical spectacular!” Elaine Bedell added: “We’re delighted to bringing The Next Great Magician to our entertainment slate, and to be working with Andrew and Derren who are the best in the business when it comes to magic and illusion production.”

The Next Great Magician is executive produced by Andrew O’Connor, Derren Brown and Matt Crook. It was commissioned by Elaine Bedell, Director of Entertainment & Comedy and Peter Davey, Commissioning Editor, Entertainment for ITV.

About Vaudeville Productions - Vaudeville Productions are currently producing Derren Brown: Miracle at The Palace Theatre in the West End and Derren Brown: The Push for Channel 4. About Crook Productions Run by Matt Crook, Crook Productions is the co-producer of the forthcoming series Thief Trackers and Honey I Bought The House. It is part of Cat’s On The Roof Media, the group founded by Peep Show co-creator Andrew O’Connor and ITV Studios. As well as Crook Productions, Cat’s On The Roof Media is the parent company for new production businesses Gameface Productions and Second Act Productions. Gameface Productions is a game show specialist run by The Cube creator Adam Adler, while Second Act Productions is a scripted comedy specialist that recently signed a first look agreement with comedy writer and producer Lee Hupfield.

The Next Great Magician

Postby Mandrake » Nov 5th, '16, 14:26

Courtesy of http://www.magicweek.co.uk:

The Next Great Magician: Sunday 6th November on ITV. From the programme makers: ITV will showcase the elite of the magic world as they all compete to become The Next Great Magician. Hosted by Stephen Mulhern and Rochelle Humes, some of the world’s best magicians will perform their very best tricks and illusions for ITV viewers – many seen for the first time ever on TV. Over five weeks, each episode will showcase six world-class magicians presenting their A-list material to viewers. These artists are unsurpassed in their craft and hero worshipped by other magicians despite being largely unknown to the outside world... until now of course.

Viewers will see all aspects of magic covered throughout the series: illusions, comedy magic, location stunts, close-up performances... In the first show of the series, US close-up magician Eric Jones gets a helping hand from Rylan Clark and Suzanne Shaw, comedy magicians and double act Young & Strange bring along a furry friend, Jordan Gomez from France reveals his manipulation act, female illusionist Ines has to escape from a terrifying situation, escapologist Jonathan Goodwin keeps the studio warm and Xavier Mortimer blends magic, circus acts, music and comedy.

Ultimately it’s the performing magicians within each episode who judge each other’s performances and decide which act goes through to the final. In the final, all 5 winners from the previous shows will compete against each other for the chance to win their very own ITV special! The Next Great Magician is a co production between Crook Productions and Vaudeville Productions for ITV. "The Next Greatest Magician, Sunday 7pm on ITV"

Did anybody see this last week?

I finally got round to watching it last night, apologies if this is elsewhere.

I liked Jonathan's straight jacket escape, I've never seen that done before

Two threads now merged. Yes, I watched it and really enjoyed it. Somehow the acts were different enough to retain my jaded interest in UK TV magic! OK, some of the tricks were 'known', or at least I figured out a way of achieving the same effect but it was all still good quality magic. I'm not sure I'd have voted the same act into first place but let's see the rest of the programmes before being too controversial! Skybox is set and ready for the next show.....

Yes I don't think I would of put the act through, I found myself wandering off a little. I did enjoy the show though.

In the second show, I really felt like the audience loved the nightmare act, and really reacted strongly to it... They didn't react that way to any of the other acts.
It got me wondering, if magicians judging other magicians acts is the right way to determine the winner?

I'd love to see 2 votes, which act did the magicians vote for, and which act did the audience vote for.
I wonder how rare it will be for both votes to match up?

p.s. I also really loved the nightmare act!

That act from Magus Utopia was just a part of the full act, he promised the flying bed illusion if they went through to the final and that's the other part of this same act.

Apart from being at Blackpool last year they were also at FISM in Rimini where Marcel gave a lecture with some behind the scenes info and showed costumes, headdresses etc from the show. As you might imagine, a lot of very hard work goes into these shows and there are several versions currently on tour with different Utopia casts performing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second programme and, to my mind at least, the quality and uniqueness of the magic far outshadows The Magicians and other UK magic shows in recent years. Barry and Stuart were wonderfully disgusting, as is expected; Katherine Mils was superb and tailored an act from a very ‘girlie’ point of view. Will Houston was supremely skilful and what he did was as close to real magic as possible. Although I’ve seen it before, I even enjoyed Hun Lee and, as some will know, I’m not a fan of manipulation acts but this one is different enough to keep me happy! I thought Andi Gladwin was a real hoot, I’ve only seen him do close up and parlour stuff but the balloon act was great!

Looking at the list of acts I can see that we can expect a lot more top quality magic, even if the ‘winners’ of each show seem to be a slightly strange choice at times!

The third show certainly kept up the momentum although I thought Rune Klan seemed to be in a less spectacular league to the other acts, even so his act was excellent. Seol Park’s act went on a bit too long for my jaded brain cell but he certainly took an old principle and dragged it well into the 21st century. Josephine Lee was a great opener with a superb big box act, Laura London is always good value and her card trick was truly mind boggling. Paul Vu’s fingers seemed to have a mind of their own when manipulating the Cubes but Rob Zabrecky’s act was really excellent, totally different to any of the others and great fun to watch – possibly not so much fun for the participants at the time!

Can’t wait until the next show!

The Laura London stumped me, I agree Seol's act did drag a bit but the ending got me first time around

As for Rob Zabrecky i just have to look at him, i remember him drawing all over himself on fool us

As we're now some sixteen months after the winners were declared, I wonder what's happened to the promised 'special' featuring Barry & Stuart? They've had lots of TV shows of their own already so it should have been relatively easy to construct another show of their magic.

Can't help with any new info on the promised "special", but I really appreciate Barry & Stuart's brand of magic, and would love to see this.
