As some of you may know, Dr Todd, aka Todd Landman, more accurately Prof Landman posted here on TM for many moons but has recently taken a giant stride forward in his career as reported by VanishLive and several other magic news sites - see the following article:.

Professor Brings Unique Magic To Nottingham

By day, he is one of the most senior professors at the University of Nottingham – but by night, Todd Landman baffles and entertains audiences in equal measures as a magician.

The 49-year-old, the new pro vice-chancellor in the Faculty of Social Sciences, will bring his unique brand of educational magic to the city for a special charity show in January.

He says it will force the audience to question life’s general assumptions in a philosophically-led performance that will also include references to some of Nottingham’s greatest icons and landmarks.

Prof Landman, of Mapperley Park, said: “It’s a little unusual for someone in my role to also be a magician but I’ve tried to bring the two worlds together.

“By crafting this character of the academic magician, I’m trying to use magic as a medium for education.

“A lot of my shows are around subjects like philosophy, maths, politics and history. I try to make people think twice about the certainties of life. I’m doing things that are inexplicable and raise questions about why we do what we do.

“There’s a whole network of magicians and mind readers but there’s very few taking that academic angle. Some people say they have been baffled, educated and entertained all at once.

“The demonstrations are of the mental kind – it’s more like Derren Brown than Tommy Cooper.”

Prof Landman, originally from Pennsylvania in the United States, has been a magician since he was eight and has performed for the past 38 years.

He is an associate of the inner Magic Circle – the second most senior rank of the organisation – and says he is one of the only performers in Britain to combine education with magic.

Previous performances have been held during a flight with Ross Brawn’s Formula 1 team, on top of a Vienna mountain to the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mongolia, while he has also worked as a magic consultant on TV programmes like Midsomer Murders.

His latest 90-minute show, which involves interaction with the audience, will be held at the 200-capacity Nottingham Lakeside Arts on January 20 and 21. It will raise money for the university’s Life Cycle 5 campaign, which is raising money towards world-leading dementia research.

Prof Landman said it is a cause close to his heart after his father passed away following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease in 1997.

The show will be his first performance in Nottingham since he moved from the University of Essex, where he was executive dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences for 22 years, in September.

“It includes Nottingham themes and I’ve worked some of the history into the show,” he added. “There’s references to some of the luminaries and landmarks within the city, which will all come together in a surprising finale.

“There will be passing references to D H Lawrence, the River Trent and even Boots, with the results totally perplexing.”

The show will provide the finale of the Life Cycle 5 campaign, which is close to reaching its £350,000 fundraising figure set when it launched in January.

Andy Legge, the university’s community fundraising manager, said: “This is the first time we’ve hosted a dedicated event at Lakeside with proceeds going to the cause.

“It’s quite a novel and unique way to raise funds and it was very interesting when we first heard about Todd coming to the university and being a magician. We’re absolutely delighted he’s decided to support us.”

Lakeside Arts director Shona Powell added: “Not only have we never had a pro vice-chancellor with magical powers before but we’ve never had one starring in their own show.”
