Derren Brown to return to Channel 4 with 'The Push'

Postby Mandrake » Dec 8th, '15, 19:51

From the C4 website:

Multi-award winning Derren Brown will return to our screens in January 2016 with a brand new one-off psychological experiment, 'Derren Brown: The Push'

In the groundbreaking special for Channel 4, Derren Brown exposes the psychological secrets of obedience and social compliance - lifting the lid on the terrifying truth that, when confronted with authority, our natural instinct is to unflinchingly obey without question. To such an extent that even the most moral people can be made to commit the most horrendous acts, simply because they are told to do so.

Derren Brown said: “I'm truly excited to be back on Channel 4, especially as this project is the first to be produced by my new company, Vaudeville Productions. The world of social compliance is a deeply fascinating one and hopefully we will take the viewer on a journey that will be disturbing and entertaining in equal measure."

Derren Brown: The Push comes to Channel 4 in the new year.

Derren Brown: The Push is commissioned by Liam Humphreys, Channel 4’s Head Of Entertainment and Factual Entertainment, and Entertainment Editor, Sarah Lazenby. The Executive Producers for Vaudeville Productions are Derren Brown, Andrew O'Connor and Martin Dance. The Series Producer is Martin Turner.

It seems as though if you want to see Derren do his magical/psychological illusionist stuff then you have to go see his live shows, not his TV shows.

Courtesy of www.magicweek.co.uk:

Derren Brown Pushed to the Edge 9pm on Tuesday 12th January (1 hour 35 minutes) on Channel 4.

Psychological illusionist Derren Brown returns with Pushed to the Edge; his most ambitious experiment to date. He aims to persuade an unwitting member of the public to push another person off a roof, seemingly to their death. Brown is investigating the powers of social compliance: how authority, peer pressure or ideology can be used to make people carry out horrific acts. His subject is Chris Kingston, a 29 year-old member of the public who is unaware he's being filmed or manipulated at a distance. The setting is the gala launch night of a fictitious new charity called Push. Brown has recruited Hollywood special effects artists, stunt coordinators and a troupe of 70 actors to stage this carefully choreographed experiment.

I got a giggle at the guy being called Bernie, but that was probably the highlight of it for me.

Thought it got a bit too Fawlty Towers but without the kippers...

I thought it was ok, not his best though I admit. I think I was more interested in watching how the whole situation was set up and escalated than the back story of social compliance.

Just watched it and felt we'd seen most of this, or something very much akin, before on at least two occasions. Like Becky, I found the setup and the FX were of far more interest than the point of the show. On consideration I now reckon that I, and perhaps many others with an interest in magic, were most certainly not the target audience for this show.

Whilst I don't worship at the feet of D.Brown Esq, I do enjoy his stage shows which are, IMHO, very entertaining. Roll on the next stage tour!!! :D
