I would avoid them. Sure they are nice, make things easier in certain situations. The catch is you suddenly become confined to the mat, all your work becomes waist level, unless you are sitting down, then most of your work will have to be done sitting down. Another question is where are you going to be performing. Restaurants? It is difficult to move all the plates and stuff to make room for your mat? Walk around? The mat becomes useless. Close up? how close working on a mat restricts anyone just a few seats back. Unless you are working at a set place and will always have access to a clear table or are bringing your own mats become a problem logistically. And if you are practicing on one but not performing on one, then why? It will just mess you up down the line.
Just food for thought.
