Soda cans with smaller mouths?

Postby DaveWise » Aug 29th, '16, 20:33

Hi all,
I'm writing from the USA, so this may be different in the UK: Just wondering if anyone has noticed that soda cans have smaller mouths these days. I used to do a couple of effects that required sneaking a quarter into the can through the mouth. It had been several years since I had performed the effect. Much to my surprise, it didn't fit! When did this happen? What madness is this?!

Perhaps US quarters are slightly larger now? I haven't been able to find anything on Google.

That's going back some, I haven't performed that for years :)

I don't know if things have changed recently but I often used to find that certain cans wouldn't work for this, if I remember rightly Pepsi and Dr Pepper would never work. Beer cans seemed to be the best and any Tescos (I don't expect you get Tesco in the US?) own brand cans were good.

I used to use a 10 pence piece which is around about the same size a quarter.

Yes it's been a long time! Still a fun, impromptu party trick... I made it work, although it caught me off guard! We don't have Tescos here. I'll be on the look-out for wide mouthed cans now.

By the way, @Lady Of Mystery, I just noticed you joined this forum a mere 17 days after I did-- back in 2006. Since then you've posted substantially more than I have, though :D
