Hypnosis

Postby Johnny Wizz » Oct 11th, '16, 17:20

Having only dabbled on the edge of trying to learn hypnosis I have recently been approached a couple of times by customers for my close up magic show asking whether I did hypnosis as well. I have Reality Is Plastic but would like some more sources to work on. Can any of you recommend my best first steps in to this craft? Is it something you can truly learn from books and DVDs or do you need a tutor?

You can learn plenty on your own. Though my hypnosis came on hugely when I took expensive training!

Check out the works of Jon Chase, and Eddie Burke's Secrets of Stage and Cabaret Hypnosis.

I'm a hypnotherapist and I only use "pseudo-hypnosis" or "suggestibility tests" when I perform. I suggest (no pun intended) that you start there; it may be all you need anyway. There's a good selection in the stage hypnotist's bible - Ormond McGill's "New Encyclopedia", which you should read if you want to go into this seriously.

There are dangers in performing hypnosis without proper training. You should also check out the Hypnotism Act 1952 and get insurance, which I gather can be expensive. The stage hypnotists here will no doubt say I'm talking nonsense, and it's perfectly safe. Perhaps I'm over-cautious, but I wouldn't do it - not without training, anyway.

Peter Reveen gave me one of his books. I wish I could remember the name. Was just a little pamphlet and it was mostly just to relax kind of thing. We tried some of the exercises and much to my amazement/horror they worked. Never played with it again. I remember going through some calming thing then telling my wife to forget the number 4. I asked her to count to seven. She did leaving out the 4. She didn't remember any of it, she tried it on me but it didn't work I can't relax enough in that environment.

Peter was a very funny man. He put my grandmother under and had her sit at my fathers piano and play. And play she did! Mind you she never played an instrument before and to us it was like a child banging on the keys, it was painful. For her however, she thought she was amazing! And yet if you asked him about his show he would say it is about half and half when he puts people under. He gets the volunteers up on stage and goes through the excercises and decides which ones to keep. He freely admitted that he lets those only "slightly under' leave the stage. He would keep the ones that were totally under and those that were faking but going along with the show and use them accordingly. Often offering them free tickets to the next show in order to do it again. Those that faked being under were always the biggest hams and usually made the show.

The key factor in hypnosis is to realise that it is a load of bunkum and doesn't exist. Once you get that in your mind you will make great progress in the matter. I know I did.

I suppose I have been derelict in my duty of not advising Johnny on sources to learn hypnosis. However, I don't know anything about this awful "street hypnosis" whatever on earth that is. I can only advise on stage hypnosis.

I would certainly echo Barry's suggestion of Ormond Mc'Gills book. He should ignore various twitterings and twaddle that it is an out of date book because it bloody well isn't. Or if it is he can ignore the dated bits anyway. It is supposed to be an encyclopedia and that is why there may be too much information for some people.

Of course the most superior work of them all is my own. But for some reason (laziness probably) I can't be bothered promoting it. I must be getting old and not as greedy as I used to be. However, if he (or anyone else) shows interest I will exert myself to describe it.
