nail writer vs. boon writer

Postby taneous » Jun 20th, '05, 15:20

I've recently experimented with both these gimmicks and these are my observations. This is sort of a review, but i wasn't sure it fitted in the reviews section.

I find writing with a nailwriter reasonably easy. It doesn't look too different from my usual handwriting, although that doesn't say much.
I find that the nw is difficult to find in my pocket and sometimes slips off my nail - but I suppose with practice this can be resolved. Using the nw results in a bit of pain under my nail the next day. I assume this will form some kind of callouse with frequent use - kind of like playing the guitar. Nail writers are very much cheaper than boon writers.

The boon writer is more difficult to write with - in that it's under my thumb - but once again, that should come with practice. I feel a bit more confident with the boon writer - in that it doesn't slip off when I'm writing, and it's a lot more hidden - especially in a resturaunt context where you have people walking behind you. It's also easier to find - in that I can stick it on to a card in my pocket. The vernet boon writer that I bought from elluzionist didn't last too long - it already has a crack in the plastic, so I've ordered a metal one from Hank Lee's.

Anyone else got any comments?

a super sharpie is a good compromise and comes with built in misdirection and is ink but the downside is its way more expensive as the nw or boom but is ink.
like you ive tried both and ended up useing a version madup by my uncle which was a self inking scribe tp hidden under a pad on a board which i used for other effects before a mental sypathetic exersise.
i belive theres a pad comercialy thats a super sharpie pad combo with reader thingy.

I couldn't work a nail writer, just couldn't get it to stay in place.

I have a Vernet boon which I am very happy with. True the writing can be a bit wonky but I make a point of saying after I have"written with a pencil" that its a bit untidy because i amholding the pad / card / anything else in my hand.

I have never been questioned about the writing

Nail Writer or Boon

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 27th, '08, 19:07

:D It's really all a matter of personal 'workability'. Some magicians bite their nails and the standard Swami would never do.
That's where the Boon might score.

The TT ones I personally prefer, both the Vernet & David T versions.

Edwin ( Supreme Magic) put out the Connor Band Writer. This was a piece of bendable metal which worked really well..it was solidly supported. The actual band was a bit broad so I cut it by nearly a half and smoothed the metal down. Described in 13 Steps with other Swami's

The late David de Val put out his method of making a Boon type one.
All you needed was a small item bought in a haberdashery shop.
De Val Thumb Writer plus.

BUT you need look no further than TM. July 2006 My Ink TT by Abraxus.
All you need to know with DIY.
The bad news for any secret searchers is: The post is safely in the Restricted Area, Mentalists Only! Sorry guys( to the genuine members)

I prefer the nail writer. It just needs a bit of bending to make it a snug fit and you have no problems. Its so tiny you can hardly see it, its easy to write with and if need be, you can dump the bit of lead and cut off the end of a biro and have a biro nail writer !!

Nail Writer versus Boon writer

Postby Allen Tipton » Aug 28th, '08, 10:16

:D Delighted to remind the 'Restricted' Members of such a practical & useful post Iain. You feel old! How do you think I feel.

When I am posting I almost always have to scrap the first empty grid and go back to see the title of the Post! Seriously. :?

MANDRAKE. Couldn't we have the title of the Posts written below as well as at the heading? Please. :) OR better still actually printed on the reply grid ready.Wow.

Back to Swami. Which ever cap, sorry, gimmick fits... wear it.

What you must remember is we are not writing a full essay or thesis with it. Every time we write..it is short.

I like the boon myself, results can be a bit shakey so I just do simple 2 digit numbers with it.
When performing up close and surounded, I find it easier to hide. :D
