Pop Haydn has been booked by the sounds of things for the gala show so possibly a lecture or scaled down Scam school & dealer stand I imagine.

Thank you. Checking the BMS site, there seems to be no inclusion of Derek Lever's name in connection with the Festival this time. Presumably he's handed the organising wand over to others?

Having missed last year's event I was unaware that Derek Lever ceased to be on the organising committee in 2016. The question posed is did he jump or was he pushed?

Anyway, last year included EuroFISM so it's only this year that differences become apparent.

There are signs that this event is diminishing, the programme is half the size, the three show tickets are on one piece of card the same size as for one show previously. I guess costs are all rising so economies have to be made. The usual auction of used magic stuff took place today, I'm now looking forward to seeing how the lectures and shows work out. :D

Oh yes, whilst I was quietly chuffing my fish and chips tonight by total chance I met artychris - amazing as two years ago it took all weekend to meet up! Good to see you again Chris!!

Blackpool 2018 - What was your highlight?

Postby JohnnyMac » Feb 19th, '18, 16:53

I'll start the ball rolling........

For me it was Marc Salem's unscheduled lecture on Saturday.

Marc began by saying "This lecture wasn't in the program, and yet you're here...."

Marc gave us a single, very workable effect that will definitely be going into my repertoire. I won't divulge it here; besides the mentalists out there will have already read my thoughts on this.

This was the only lecture (and I went to several) that captivated me 100% throughout.

Just my opinions:

Lecture - Morgan & West. Nothing I'm going to use, but a masterclass in how well ideas can be presented if the people involve care about communicating.
Gala Performance - The Great Kaplan. Beautiful, perfect timing, a plot, drama, conflict, character, call backs.
Event - Iain De Montfort, just excellent work on what happens when you take a concept and keep pushing it to the logical (and irreverent) extremes. We should be learning to dance in the rain.
Favourite host/compere - Noel Brittain. Perfectly in tune with what an audience of magicians want to see.

Ignore my earlier comments about diminishing, the whole thing is actually evolving and becoming even better in the process. (Memo to self – shut yer gob Mandrake!)

I didn’t get to see as many lectures as I wanted but the ones I did see were:
Chad Long – crazy stuff at times but several useable items.
David Kaye – OK, this was for children’s magic but still enjoyable.
Andi Gladwin – a consummate professional even if I have seen most of the content in his previous lectures!
‘Ian D Montfort’ – fantastic presentation and soooo funny! Scarily accurate in many respects…
Mark Elsdon – I only saw half of this lecture but still most useful.
Marc Salem – far too slow paced for me and the oft repeated, ‘Co-incidence? I think not’ line became very annoying after the fifth time!
Morgan & West – brilliant! I’ll never use what they taught but it was fascinating all the same. Well presented and very entertaining.
Sylvester – OK his sound vest blew up the day before and he had to withdraw from the gala show but even so I’d have thought he would have had some points to lecture on. He said he didn’t lecture often then seemed to reply on inspiration from the audience most of the time. Disappointing in many respects for me.
Fay Presto – I saw this lecture a couple of years ago, even so it was still full of seasoned and well-honed advice. Great stuff indeed.
Russ Stevens – good to get all the background info to BGT and about Issy Simpson. It was also good to see that she was like any other 9 year old chasing her brother around the Horseshoe area!
Richard Cadell – OK, I grew up (using the words very loosely!) with Harry Corbett’s time with Sooty so this talk was a goldmine of info for me. Richard obviously has a deep love for Sooty and his history which I’m glad to have heard. A great ending where he auctioned off the stage Sooty from the previous night’s show - £1,000 including Sweep and Soo puppets all for a very good cause. I wonder how much more was collected from the donations for photos?

Finally, I echo the above comments about Noel Britten – for me he was the best compere ever, fully in tune with the audience being mostly magicians but still funny and entertaining for lay people. I shamelessly admit I will use many of his one liners if I can remember them!

The gala shows were excellent and even though they had no interval and were shorter than in previous years, it all worked well. Previous shows had seemed to be padded out with less than entertaining acts so this new format worked much better. Also it meant getting a larger audience for each evening so I hope BMC made some serious money to be ploughed back into future conventions.

Clearly the new committee and approach was a success, congrats on all at BMC for having the guts and foresight to try this new format.
