DMC Elites

Well ok, this is exciting! The first magic I've purchased in a looooong time.

So the advert claims:

The cards feature the latest revision of the unique OPTICAL MARKING SYSTEM (OMS), a powerful 'reader' system designed specifically for the use of magicians and mentalists (as opposed to many decks designed for the gambling world). The OMS has an ingeniously hidden marking mechanic that is readable with extreme speed, at great range and even in poor light. It hides the value and suit of the card in plain sight with no decoding necessary - the back of the card literally says the value and the suit. Despite this, you can still comfortably hand the deck to a layman, safe in the knowledge that even the most critical observer would not ever suspect, let alone detect, the secret markings.

Well, there's not really a huge amount to say or argue with on that. The system is very clever and the instructions are simple as: all pictorial. Once you see the instruction card they do fairly leap out at you. I'm not so sure about the "great distance and poor lighting" claim myself but that depends how good your eyesight is and how many GnT's you've had probably :)

Personally I'm confusing a few of the numbers for reasons I can't really say too much about without giving the game away but I suspect that's mostly down to a lack of practice as yet on my part.

Most of us will be familiar with adverts V's what you get, but all in all I'm very pleased with these so far, and just need to go find some cool things to do with a marked deck now as you don't get any suggested routines or anything, just the deck, and this is my first marked deck.

I'm going to give them a comfortable 4 out of 5 for now, mainly on the basis I will need to iron out the confusion between a few of the numbers as mentioned, although there really is no way I can see they could make it any easier/clearer without it being obvious to the casual observer.

I should also note that before I read the instructions I looked at the back of the cards as one might, and even on a thorough close inspection you really wouldn't suspect they were maked at all. Very clever.

Also worthy of note is that the card markings are in such places that generally no matter how the card is held by anyone, they should clearly be visible unless ofcourse the entire back is obscured, and the markings are large as can be without totally giving themselves away to everyone. Round about an inch which is pretty big for a card back!

Quite a tough review as there's really not a lot to say haha, it's a marked deck, simple as! Without completely revealing how the system works, that's all I can think to say really. I do hope it's of some use to anyone curious.

Cheers

****Edit****: I went through the cards last night just looking at the backs lazily whilst half watching a film and got 99% of them in a second of glancing at the card. The thing I have to argue about is the distance and poor lighting thing, but that aside I'm changing my score on these to 5/5 for simplicity and speed of reading.
