Using Local Currency

Postby Nic Castle » Feb 15th, '19, 23:41

I apologise in advance if this has been discussed previously. I did a couple of searches but found nothing.

Is it better to use local currency when performing close-up magic? I often use £2 coins, but if you look at commercial magic tricks they often use gimmicks for American currency, although there are more and more UK gimmicks being produced. If you start performing with US Coins does it cause an audience to question the legitimacy of the prop? If it doesn't matter, does it matter if it is a coin at all? could we not just use round disks. Personally, I believe using local currency is best, but not essential. What are other peoples thoughts?

A lot of tricks now use poker chips which are universal. However, carrying coins seems a reasonable everyday thing to do whereas carrying poker chips needs a good explanation. Coins can be borrowed and switched, chips can't. Not sure that helps in any way but there you go!!
