Flourishes!

Postby stevebo » Jul 17th, '05, 16:21

Even though I'm not too good at flourishes, I'm working on them now.

Enjoy!

First time I've tried video editing... Hope it's alright.

Not bad at all, some of them very well. Keep practicing.

Thanks!

I still can't get fanning down though. I can just about do the one handed fan properly but I can't get the thumb fan down properly!

How was the video editing?

What's the problem with the thumb fan? i.e. what goes wrong?

Whenever I do the thumb fan, I'm left with a huge chunk of cards in the end. I think I don't have enough pressure on the cards. Also, the cards are not evenly spread!

As for a huge chunk of cards at the end, do you mean at the bottom or the top of the fan? You should be fanning from the bottom of the deck...

How big is your fan? Ideally, it should be about 180 degrees, and that's plenty for a new deck?

Are you using a good slippery deck of cards? A worn-in Bike deck is ideal but it should be pretty new or else it won't come out evenly.

If you are serious about fans, you should really invest in a nice fanning deck and some fanning powder...from what I've heard this does make a big difference.

I put the deck in my left hand and spread the cards from left to right from the top. Then I end up with a huge chunk of cards at the right of the deck.

Now I'm confused :?.

If you spread the cards from the top the chunk will be at the bottom of the fan...

Do we agree on what the top is? The side of the deck next to your thumb? Then, start with your right thumb near the thumb side of the deck, and fan. You should get a nice fan.

If you start from the bottom you may end up with a chunk at the end. This is because you can't fit all the cards in. Try moving the thumb up the deck quicker as you fan?

Hi Stevebo...

Even if the stuff that you did on the video was c*** (not the best).... and its certainly ISN'T, the song more than makes up for it!!!! Love it. :D

That is very very nice effect you used, it goes well with the song, and the flourishes are nice. The flipback vanish is good too, although if you can, try and flash the back of your hand slightly after the cards have disappeared. People have sometimes said the cards are stuck to the back of my hand  although you can prove they're not, it kinda spoils the effect  maybe I'm doing it wrong :?

Great stuff Stevebo!!!

I'm wondering if I'm actually doing this right. Here's a video.

Also, anyone? About the flourishes video? Cheers

Ahhhhh...now I understand :).

It seems to me that the cards you're fanning are too widely spaced - if you move your thumb up the deck faster then you should be able to space them much more narrowly.

Ideally there will only be a flash of the back, not about a quarter as with yours.

Also, if you start fanning from higher up the deck you will end up with the chunk at the bottom, which looks nicer!

Thanks Mark!

I love that song! I can't stop listening to it now... It's just stuck on my mind. Damien Rice - Cannonball.

Personally, I don't usually use the flipback vanish. I just needed some filler for the video. Wait a few months and I should have much more flourishes (Just bought Dan and Dave's System). I don't think you should show the back of your hand unless the spectator's tell you to because your fingers are spread out and it just kinda ruins the effect. That's what I think anyway.

Thanks Katriel! I'll use the idea of fanning higher up in the deck!

nice vid steve, i think you could've kept your left arm steadier in your wink change and flipback vanish. The 'move' might be given away :D
