Tips for a beginner?

Postby chongjasmine » Jan 27th, '23, 05:33

I am interested to learn magic two years ago, but put it off due to my job. Now that I am free of job, I can spend time to actually learn magic.

But the problem is, my hand is quite slow when it comes to cards, and there are so many types of magic available that I am quite at a loss of where to start.

What do you recommend for a beginner? Card magic, coin magic or something else?

What videos are out there for complete beginner, who is about to learn her first trick? What are some easy first tricks to master?

Thanks for your help. I hope to perform one day in front of a party of relatives.

Whilst it is very true that some people learn better from books, and some from dvds, I would recommend the following two books if you are just getting started. Both these books are available from amazon. The reason for the recommendation is that they cover a whole host of genres of magic, so coins, cards, silks, rope etc. That will give you a good idea of the type of magic you enjoy performing.

Mark Wilson's Complete Course of Magic
How to Master Magic (was the Encyclopedia of Magic)

I recommend starting with some simple self-working card tricks.

I've written a few articles which will give you some good ideas of where to start in card magic:

You do not need fast hands to present effective magic - even with cards (or coins, etc.).

Quite the contrary actually - as one of the biggest failures that I have noticed with many Magicians (not just amateur or hobbyists) is that they undertake sleights (AND talk) far too quickly! This often leads to confusion from the spectators' perspective. To this end, if they are confused with the plot, then the climax to the final effect will fail miserably.

For a beginners book on general sleight of hand, I cannot recommend more highly:

The Magic Book - Harry Lorayne. This contains card magic, coin magic, Mentalism and a wealth of other excellent material with everyday items.

The Annotated Royal Road to Card Magic - Mark Lewis. The Royal Road To Card Magic (often abbreviated RRTCM) is a planned step-by-step treatise of Card Magic. Mark's Annotations bring it all to life for the 21st Century.

With every best wish for your future success!
