Name: Brainwave Deck
Price: £6-8 (from any good magic supplier)
Type: Cards
Difficulty: 1 (piece of cake)
Performance time: Depends on the individual... a couple of minutes at most
Angles: Anywhere but beneath you.
Examinable: Nope (apart from the card they pick).
Reset Time: Instant!
Effect: Magician hands the spectator a deck of cards and explains that he has placed one card from another deck, reversed in the deck. The spectator is then asked to think of any card. The magician then opens the pack and spreads the cards in full view of everyone. Only one card is seen to be reversed, and it is the chosen card. Not only that, but when turned over the card is seen to have a different coloured back from all the other cards in the deck!

Comments: This is a very good effect, which gets great responses from spectators. If you are familiar with the ID then you will be familiar with this. The difference is that instead of the spectator’s card being face down in a deck of face up cards, with the Brainwave deck their card is found to be face up in a deck of face down cards, and also has a different colour back.

I like this deck and find the handling a lot easier than the ID I have (but this may be due to a dodgy ID). Anyway, even if you’re a novice you should be able to use this trick confidently after an hour or two.

I personally prefer the ID because if you want to switch to the Brainwave Deck you have to have 2 different colour decks on you just in case, but as a one-off trick the effect is excellent, and the colour change is the icing on the cake

Overall Rating: 8/10

Stu...see my review of Twisted Sisters...you wil love it!
If you can do the Ghost count it improves the trick immensely

I Love the Brainwave Deck, it is one of my favorite tricks, being simple and not too taxing to perform even after heavy drinking, it has left my friends stunned, usually suggesting that I add a card as soon as they name it, what fools, they always go for such farfetched ideas!

One downer though, you cant really do the trick again to the same person or group of people.

The people who own the trick will understand.

I currently own a ID & an X Deck & am thinking of purchasing a brainwave deck, seeing as so many of you rate it.

Can anyone tell me though, does the deck handle like an X Deck where you can have the cards fanned out & up so that the spec can happily see the backs of the cards while you look through the front faces, or is it like an ID where you can only let the faces be seen?

Your answer regardless will probably result in more money spent on ebay! :D

Brainwave works on the same priciple as, and in a very similar way to, the ID.

i like to get someone to pick out a card from my mirage pack return it then give my brainwave deck a rap with it while its in specs hand. then i look thru it with then and their card has turned upside down in their deck that gets some great reactions. alkso if you straiten out the mirage deck then you can riffle them and it apears their card has gone,

Brainwave Deck

Postby Renato » Sep 29th, '05, 16:15

Hi,

Got this a while ago now and didn't think much of it at the time - I just couldn't get the handling smooth. However, have recently revisited and I think it's a great deck. If you're having trouble with the reveal then take some time to wear in the deck and things will get smoother.

The only thing I don't like about it is that some of the card's placing is a bit odd - why would you reverse a card and leave it a few cards from the bottom, for example?

Still, a great deck.

Brainwave

Postby MagicTom » Nov 16th, '05, 19:25

The effect:

Its much the same as "ID" with a fab bonus on the end. I use a similar routine.

The spectator takes an "ID" from the magician. behind his back he selects a card and then puts it back in the deck upside down.
he then shuffles the deck whilst giving the magician a funny look as if we are mad. The magician then reveals a real packet of cards from his pocket. Before he opens the packet, he asks the spectator to name the card that he turned upside down. When he does so the magician opens the deck and shows that there is 1 RED backed card in a BLUE deck. (or vice versa) and that is the spectators card.

Cost: I bought it for £6 and was not happy with the quality. The cards didn't do what they are supposed to do after only a few days even though I tried different pressures etc --- However another company I buy from sells it for £2 / £3 and theirs are much better. (so a friend tells me after buying a similar trick called the "ID")

Difficulty: Requires a bit of thinking and counting of cards at a fairly quick pace. Once mastered the technique, its fairly simple. However I feel this needs good patter. I have seen some magicians who I find this trick boring with because of the lack of interesting patter.

REVIEW:

This trick is a fab trick for all skill levels. It does take a little practise and is not a trick you can perform straight away. (That's where I made the mistake in learning this trick)

You can only perform this trick once. (As you should with all tricks) But you cannot show the trick to someone else in the same room. Because no doubt the last person you showed will watch again over your spectators shoulder. The trick will easily be given away.

However the effect is stunning and people will never work it out if you do it at a good standard and ONLY once! People will demand a repeat. You MUST say no!

OVERALL

I must say I like this trick and it never failed to amaze people. I am not a card magician but this trick is a great pocket trick. I was once told by a magician that he uses it as a back up trick.
Very useful pocket trick that amazes people every time.

Would you like to mention where you bought this from?

Brainwave deck

Postby MagicTom » Nov 16th, '05, 21:21

Mandrake,

I have PM'd you as i'd rather not mention the company. (because they are good - i would never accuse them of selling me bad stuff - it was a one off - unlucky buy)

I reccomend people buy them from Penguin magic.

Thanks, as I mentioned in reply, it's OK to mention the source of the effect/trick so others can assess whether to buy or not. In view of the recent issues with Penguin, perhaps buying from them might not be a first choice for most of us here.

I have a brainwave, but under certain conditions I find that when I reach the chosen card I have to struggle to reveal it - it goes 'sticky'. Other days it works like a dream. perhaps its something to do with the temperature or too much pressure on the deck that is making it 'sticky'. I have to test it out before I start a routine. If its a dream day it stays in, otherwide I put it to one side.
