Hmmm, once again I find myself resurrecting old reviews threads. Still, best that I used the search function rather than starting another thread eh?
Got this at the Ipswich Magical Society Convention. Kernow Magic were doing it for £12 and since I'd been inspired by Roy Davenport to do some more visual, non-card magic (shock horror!
) I decided to get some sponge balls. Then realised I can't do sponge work. So bought this lovely instructional DVD.
First up, the range of moves taught is great. Things I never thought of as well as a few refinements on bits I thought I knew.
Been filming myself doing some of these moves after 15 minutes of practice and finding that they're actually rather good. However, since this is completely new groudn to me and I believe in practice before performance, I have many many more hours to practice these moves.
Ok, about the DVD, it's good.
Sankey's a clever guy and all, produces some top class magic and even gives us a bit of history on where you can learn (or rather where he learnt) certain moves. I like that...
What I don't like...
He only shows each move two or three times, so you have to keep on going back over and over. I prefer to be able to watch something on one sitting, practice and then watch again to pick up other moves etc whereas with this I had to watch the section on retention vanishes three times before I got the hang of it. Maybe that makes me rubbish... I dunno...
Anything else I like or dislike? Hmmm. The sponges aren't all that soft and I don't like the shape as much as the actual sponge balls (personal preference I guess) but then again, enarly everything he teaches here can be applied to sponge balls.
A rating? Hmmm.
For £12 a definite 10/10
Had I paid £23, maybe a 9/10, but only for it being a bit steep.
Overall though, a great buy, and anyone looking to get started in sponge magic, I suggest buying a set of sponge balls, a set of bunnies and this. That way, you can learn eveything you need to know, and if you don't like the earplu8gs, tehn you still have other sponges.
Hooray for kernow magic! (And Jay Sankey of course!)
You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism
