Criss Angel Mastermind vol 1 DVD - Coin in Soda Can

Postby MagicBill » Sat Nov 26, 2005 11:45 am

The Effect:
This effect can be performed anywhere, anytime with no special props. That's Right – No Props, No Gimmicks, No Switches and No Set Ups of any kind are required! Borrow a spectator’s signed coin... ask for any can of soda or beer from anywhere... then watch their face as their signed coin miraculously penetrates their sealed can, which immediately is heard and seen inside the can. As a matter of fact, the spectator, not the magician, can be the first person to try to remove the coin from the open can when they get home! It’s Completely Clean!

Cost:
Around £25

Difficulty:
2-3

Review:
This is the effect everyone is talking about! In fact, it's actually been described as being one of the greatest impromptu effects EVER. To be honest, I can't actually believe Criss and Wayne Houchin have decided to release this - but I am VERY glad they have!
If you haven't seen this effect performed, check it out here:

http://www.ellusionist.com/order/Criss- ... .html?cat={CATEGORY%20ID}

Wayne puts his mouth to the can at one point in the clip which does look suspicious, but you don't need to do this and it has nothing to do with the working etc.

The above description of the effect is 100% accurate. The coin and can are unprepared - they can both be borrowed. There are no funny or suspicious moves at any point and the climax is as clean and direct as they come! As you can see, the effect is fundamentally simple - a spectator's borrowed, signed coin penetrates a can of 'soda' or beer. Your hands and the can are freely shown empty and the coin can immediately be heard INSIDE the can. Open the can and pour out the contents - amazingly the coin can be heard and seen inside the can. You can let the spectator remove the coin and confirm that it is their signed coin.

This is a very clever effect. Not only is it visually a super cool trick, but audibly impressive too. The DVD is well presented and the explanation is well broken down and easy to follow. The trick itself is almost self-working and just how amazing it will look depends on how much practice you are willing to put into it! Make no mistake, this is a gem of an effect. It is just as much fun to perform as it is to watch and is virtually gauranteed to blow your audience away. The quote 'reputation maker' is one that is too often associated with effects that don't really merit it. Not this time.

Extras:
Mindfreak promo clip, Interview, Credits and Mastermind Vol 2 preview (can't wait for this one now either!)

Overall:
I did this at a gig last night and, trust me, everyone was totally blown away. It might be a good idea to end your set with this effect because, as far as reactions are concerned, it doesn't get any better. I only wish this cost £100. That way, less people would own and perform it!

10/10 without question.

As I'm living in sweden I just wonder if this effect has to be done with quarters or if it's possible to do with a coin at a different size?

This can be done with almost any coin and any can. Some will work better than others, but I am sure you'll find the perfect match pretty easily.

Sorry, just thought I'd better add something...

Without giving too much away, the type of coin you ask for will depend on the can you will be using.

I've pretty much worked out what the best coins are for most of the main cans you are likely to come across when you are performing. PM me if you have this DVD and would like some pointers!

Couldnt agree more with you guys on this effect, fantastic impromptu routine!

Quite easy to master it took me about an hour to get off pat.

I think the reason it is so impressive is its simplicity & no really difficult moves to master & it looks so fair, clean & open.

Performed this in public last night for the first time & it stunned the audience that saw it, they really had a good go at removing the coin from the can but when I left the venue at 11.30 they were still passing it round trying to remove it.

Another tip after performing this sign the can etc.

Must remember to carry a Sharpie around with me at all times!

Cheers

I'm VERY tempted by this...thanks for the review. I was thinking that this seemed a bit expensive for one effect plus a few extras. Obviously not. I'm guessing this is one that requires a six pack of cans or so for practise, much like H&S.

The annoying thing is, I am not really too keen to drink the contents of a can after a coin has been floating around in it - you don't know where it's been. Be prepared to waste a lot of drink practising this one!

I was seriously considering buying this recently but, on top of my already substantial order at Ellusionist, i thought it might be a bit much. After all i am going to be getting about 7 DVDs soon anyway! Glad to hear its as good as i think it is!

Do any British stores stock this yet or is it just Elusionist? I'd hate to pay for the high shipping costs AND customs tax!
