The magic of Jesus

Postby D magic » Sat Dec 31, 2005 12:45 pm

Did anyone watch "The magic of Jesus" last night? What did you think of it?
personally, I think the standing on water illusion was quite impressive but the others were a bit obvious.

I have to say, despite their annoying style (for style read voices) some of the tricks were rather good.

Magic of Jesus - oh dear oh dear. And now there's going to be a sequel!

I'm not Christian but even I found some of it offensive. And some of the things they did were so ridiculous - I mean, did they really expect people to believe that they were making people see? The fish thing was obvious, and the pregnancy, really. I wouldn't be surprised if some Christians were offended, if any were at all.

That said, I do think some of their patter was entertaining but I can see the public getting quite sick of them purely because of their performance style - that energetically charged style wears thin pretty quickly and I can't imagine many more shows being able to sustain it.

Actually, I did find the last effect quite entertaining - nice presentation, even though I could think of a few methods. Plus the Walking on Water was a nice illusion.

Barry and Stuart, I'm sure they're technically proficient and could be quite entertaining, I just don't like all these edgy concepts. But that's me.

Compare this style to that of Paul Zenon - he's just being himself (or so it seems) and I think that the less-stylised approach is more favoured. Of course, I may be wrong.

White Magic was entertaining, some standard fare and some not so standard.

In conclusion, Magic of Jesus didn't really do it for me - I prefer seeing straight magic shows, like Paul Zenon.

The Magic of Jesus was a refreshing look at how perception of miracles versus the skill of a performer have a very fine line.

Personally, I find B&S to be quite annoying in a sense of their odd parody of the 'Suits-you' sir scenario, but I have to say that taking the miracles of Jesus and attempting to RECREATE them (and NOT trying to debunk them) was far from blasphemous, insulting or in anyway un-Christian. Their show was a recreation of a set of biblical 'miracles', nothing more.

It was, in fact, no more blasphemous than having pictures or statues in churches of a seminaked bearded guy on a cross. Which is also a recreation of a biblical image, is it not?

A fantastic bunch of illusions, effects and tomfoolery. And if you missed it, you missed a magical treat.

This is also being discussed under 'Just when you thought!" on TM.

I do have a number of views regarding this from the Christian point of view but generally it was pretty naff but what do you expect?

The aim was to create the effect and this had to be done by tricks (unless they possess something I'm not aware of) I was more saddened as a magic type than a Christian as the switches, jacket moving because of wires, etc. was naff.

It served no great purpose for magicians or Christians and any of Hollywood's special effects departments could have done the job of showing what it looked like, and fed 5,000 men plus the women plus the children in a much better way. Harry Potter was much more convincing.

Fantastic - not really. Ecstatic - feet didn't leave the ground once so obviously not! It did what it set out to do, fill a slot in the TV guide. I can't imagine any great uproar from Christians and it wasn't as entertaining as the 'Life of Brian' at any stage.

Hehehehehehehhehe

What we often fail to observe is that we should be criticising these shows as 'joe public' and not as experienced magicians. After all, magicians' target audiences are not usually scrutinising magi.

I watched the show with an open mind, and I have to say that in the presence of 5 family members, and it was a far more entertaining hour than we'd had all night. And as I'd expect, none of them asked 'how on earth did they get away with using an ID' etc. BECAUSE NONE OF THEM KNEW WHAT ONE WAS.

The farcical modern Christmas which bears more of a nod towards commercialism than Christianity (How many people here went to Church over Xmas?) has diluted our minds with weak broadcasting of 'Xmas top 100' shows and re-runs of classic movies.

How refreshing, then, to see one of the most famous set of 'Magic Miracles' ever performed being bravely recreated by two modern magicians.

Again, I give it full marks. Firstly, because of its entertainment value. Secondly, for it's creativity. And finally, just because I personally felt that it was an interesting and topical theme on which to base a magic show.

Of course, we're all entitled to our own opinions. If you liked it, fine. If you thought it was drivel, fine. Who's counting?
