A lot of people say that kids don't respond well to card tricks. However, I bought Mark Leveridge's Kids Magic DVD this week and he explains how he takes adult-based close up effects and covnerts them with a child's presentation.
Using Mark's philosophy, and the fact the Bill Abbott's Stand-up DVD is awesome, I'd say that cards and kids probably would work. I suppose it's a case of not using the cards with regard to their value, as that may be the bit that some children don't understand, but vanishes, transpositions and productions would definitely work. Substitute pictures instead of signatures on cards maybe.
There are no bad tricks, only bad magicians.
Oh - a review of the kid's close-up DVD would be great if you get the time...
