I have learned to mistrust magicians. They lie to me :)

I'm pretty sure this is incorrect. After all, it's likely to be more illegal to produce a replica of a coin (ie. a forgery) than to deface a legitimate coin. I can't see why one particular company should have permisison to break the law anyway.

I think it's more likely that with the relatively small scale defacement/damage of coins by these companies, and the fact that the end product costs more than the original coin (therefore being unlikely to be deliberately passed off as real currency), it's not really worth anybody's time to prosecute any of these companies for treason or any other laughable offence. Especially since many are overseas.

Actually you're wrong - as I've just found out.

Whilst it is illegal to reproduce or alter currency, it's something that the Bank of England take VERY seriously if they find out and will not hesitate to prosecute.

However, you CAN apply to them for permission to copy or alter currency if you provide a valid reason that is NOT criminally related. The copying of notes is more 'touchy' and notes are made in such a way that they won't photocopy accurately but it's still something that the BoE are hot on.

It is more than likely that Eddie G DOES have the necessary LEGAL permissions. Technically, his engineered coins and all the rest of them are worthless in value if used as currency but as a gimmick they're far more valuable than tthe face value.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Intriguing. The truth is stranger than fiction.

Thanks for the correction - The royal mint website seems to have no info on this, and I've seen "no comment" type responses given to others who investigated this and posted on the web, so it's not easy to get good info.

I've actually have written permission from the BoE to photocopy notes as part of my profession so can speak from personal experience.

Interestingly enough, did anyone read the article in today's Mail on Sunday about the 2p pieces now being worth more in scrap value than their face value?

This only applies to coins minted befor 1996 (I think that this way the year quoted) as they contain 97% copper. The article noted that it was illegal but took them over to France and sold them for 3p per coin and made £18 profit on a couple of Kilo's. Not worth going over just for that of course but overall I thought that the article showed some inginuity.

Incidentally, it also noted the magnetic qualities of the newer coins as they had to find a quick way of separating the older and newer coins from the mixed bags, rather than checking them coin by coin. This was achived effectively with a magnet so there could be a potential routine in there somewhere for you Raven users

Just thought that I would mention it

I used to work for the Royal Mint - and we had an issue with the Penny image machines (you put a penny in the slot, turn the wheel and it imprints the theme parks / company logo on it - it comes out rugby ball shape, but flat!)

Didnt press any charges, as the money is worthless once its been pressed.

I think they only get peed off if you make lead pound coins and try to spend them down your local.
