hi lolx - welcome to talkmagic.

You may not realise this (no one ever does  ) but there is a search feature to most php boards, and talk magic is no exception. It can be really useful.

Superman was reviewed here and discussed here. I don't think Boa has been reviewed, but taneous (a very well respected member of this forum) started a thread asking about it, and he did order it - so maybe he will chip in (or even write a review) with his thoughts...

I have a boa coin bender and personally have barely used it. I found that certain uk coins didn't work in it and it leaves marks on the coins that do work.
I do use it though but as a tool for Morgan Streblers "The Closer" effect which always goes down a storm but it certainly isn't neeeded.

I find the actual signed coin bend routine that comes with the Boa to be very angle sensitive and doesn't leave you clean without some very suspect moves. I have read upto now lots of good reviews on other websites but I'm afraid it is in a drawer a vast amount of the time for me.

I do not own the bender, however, I am disinclined to use an expensive bender when a good coin s***** would do the same job.

Kennedy has an excellent coin bending routine in his book Thoughts So Far - some very nice thinking.

Banachek is a probably the best source for bending, not just coins, but keys, spoons, etc etc.

hmm - I should post a review some time :)
The Boa is great. It's well made and does the job. All of the coin bending I do happens in the spectator's hand so I very rarely have the need to use it during performance - but it's great for 'resetting' when doing walkaround or restaurant work.
For my purposes the superman would do just as well as the Boa - but the Boa worked out a bit cheaper at the time so that's why I bought it. It's a whole lot easier and more portable than other methods.

As for marks - I only had that once when I went a bit too far (or maybe it's the steel content in South African coins  )

Superman coin bend restricts clothing?

Postby lolx » Feb 21st, '06, 11:03

Hey, i heard that the superman coin bend set-up is similiar to do raven and you ned a jacket. I live in Sinagpore and no one goes around wearing jackets! (except stage shows of course) The boa coin bender demo Jay is wearing a t-shirt. Or can you change the handling for superman coin bend like the boa handling?

I've used both and prefered Superman, but as suggested above it does require a jacket.

Come to think of it - Boa and superman handling can be the same if you adjust the superman slightly. The jacket obviously makes it easier.

Superman

Postby smitty » Feb 26th, '06, 05:41

Hey All:

Just found this chat site by Googling for Superman by Roy.

As others of you on here, I am trying to read lots of reviews on this gimmick.

I will most likely order from Roy himself soon, as we are both from Ontario.

I've read a few posts that say you have to wear a coat to do this, but the young chap on Ellusionist isn't wearing a coat. I've emailed Roy with this question and still waiting on a response.

It's a much cheaper gimmick for me than the Boa Bender from Penguin, so I will probably take my chances and order this shortly.

If and when I do order, I will be happy to post my thoughts about it here, and in the meantime will look foward to hearing others thoughts as well.

Kind Regards

smitty

You can get away with all sorts of things on video, I'd say in the real world you will need a jacket.

Yes, Happy Toad, I hear what you are saying. That's one reason why I've become QUITE skeptical of online demo's. I mean even T.V. magicians are using editing, stooges, etc., to make themselves look AMAZING. That really doesn't do Magic much justice.

On Penguin's site, right after the Boa is demo'd, the camera zooms in on the coin, so you can't see the guy ditching the gimmick, which 'obviously' has to be ditched to be as 'clean' as he looks.

Same as SLAM on Ellusionists site. Careful camera angles allow the guy to ditch the 'borrowed' coins, so he looks clean at the end.

But, like you say Happy Toad, how does one get away with these things in 'the real world'.

I don't wear a coat when I perform. I may begin to when my Mentalism show is ready to market, but at this point, I don't like wearing a coat.

If Superman, or The Raven cannot be done 'in the real world' without a coat for cover, then they aren't worth my purchasing, as amazing as they look.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.

Kind Regards...

Superman Coin Bend, No need for a Jacket

Postby Gordothemagicguy » Jan 13th, '09, 20:20

If you simply work out the reason for the ditch (After bending the coin you simply reach down with your right hand and pick up the marker and put in your Right front pocket...with the gimmick) you have the spectator hold the coin lightly in the hand while you gather up the remaining coins on the table (which you pulled out before you decided to use a spectators coin) and dump them with the other gimmick in the Left pocket. Now your clean to work on your presentation! Hope this helps : )

Save and get coinvexed/coinvexed 2. They are the only workers less than £100, in my opinion.
